Man, I can't wait for this movie. John Wagner giving it praise sealed the deal already and the first batch of early reviews are looking real good.

A review written by someone whose only point of comparison is the '95 flick, nothing about 2000 AD...

Good interview with Garland & Wagner, also addresses the film's comparisons with The Raid.

This looks really damn good. I think this will be a real upgrade on the previous effort in the same way Punisher: Warzone improved the Punisher-universe from the 2004-film.

Arrives to theaters 27. sept here. Wait is gonna be annoying but this has to be seen in the cinema.
EDIT: just realised it's only a week after the US releasedate, nvrmnd then.

Just got back from watching this and it was gloriously violent and quite gory, almost felt like an 80's action movie. Heady and Thirlby were excellent in their respective roles, but Urban fucking nailed it as Dredd, an amazing job. Tough role to pull off with half your face hidden, but he was so convincing, he definitely felt like Wagner & Ezquerra's creation had finally come to life. Avon Barksdale also had plenty of screen time and part of the drugs cartel in the 22nd century, typecast or what? The Slo-Mo effects looked awesome on the 3D big screen. Somewhat disappointed with the flat look of Mega-City One, the stubby looking Lawmaster bikes and the other vehicles, but once inside the Peach Tree Block, it really did feel like the world of Dredd. Hopefully the film's a hit and a bigger budget sequel could sort out those minor gripes.

Dredd fans will not be disappointed and keep an eye out on the graf tags! There's also a very obvious Robocop reference too

waitaminute!

perhaps my reading comprehension is fucked up, but did that critic say, JD owes it all to Robocop? It's the other way around.

Yea that causality chain is wonky, the character was around for like 10 years before Robocop right? But at least he made the connection at all. Most likely nobody else will, at least not in a major publication like the voice.

Pretty sure I previously explained Robocop was the remains of the aborted JD eighties flick in this very thread. In any case, there is a very brief but obvious Robocop reference in this movie anyway.

Bizarrely, I'm very much interested in what people across the pond think of this movie, mainly because it intentionally steers away from the current glossy comic book movie glamour and relates more to eighties action flick aesthetics.

Dude to be honest, you don't even want to know. The amount of times I had to explain that this isn't a remake of the Stallone movie makes my blood boil. Hopefully good reviews and word of mouth will prevail, otherwise as of now this movie will fail here because of something Rob Schneider did almost 20 years ago.
