The Best Show on WFMU w/ Tom Scharpling Thread
The Best Show on WFMU broadcasts every Tuesday from 9:00PM to 11:00PM EST on WFMU out of New Jersey and online at http://www.wfmu.org/. Host Tom Scharpling describes the show as 3 hours of "mirth, music and mayhem". Tom is a professional comedy writer/journalist and all around indie snob. Each show he plays music, tells a few stories/rants/reviews and then puts a topic on the table which listeners phone in for. Regular guests include Paul F. Tompkins, Patton Oswalt, Ted Leo, Zach Galifianakis and Tim & Eric. Guest segments will sometimes be an interview, sometimes be a planned comedy bit and sometimes the guests just come in studio to field listener topic calls with Tom. The big repeat guests usually do the later and it always makes for a great show.
Another element of the show is Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster. Wurster calls in nearly every show as a different (most repeating) character who interacts in long drawn out comedy bits with Tom. Some of the characters are real people (like Marky Ramone and Gene Simmons) but most of them are made up residents of a town called Newbridge, NJ. Newbridge is a fictional town Scharpling & Wurster made up. There's reoccurring callbacks that run through nearly every Wurster call ("wait, whaaat?", threatening Tom, etc.) that you'll catch on to soon enough.
I'll start by uploading some of the guest clips and then if people get into it, i'll upload some Scharpling & Wurster bits and listener calls.

June 3, 2008 - The World Is In The Turlet! / Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
Tom Scharpling and The Best Show listeners write a song over the air and indie rock band Ted Leo & The Pharmacists records the song, all within 3 hours.
This episode was incredible. The clip is almost an entire show, so it'll give you an overall feel of The Best Show too. A few calls from the topic, "Musical Moments", made it into this clip too.

a lot of the clips i'm posting are 1-2 hours long. whoever downloads, please post some feedback after you get a chance to listen.
do you prefer shorter excerpts or the full segments? the pacing is so much different than a show like ron & fez that it's difficult to do a similar interview type thread but if you're a fan of a show like comedy & everything else i'm sure you must have the patience.
i want to post the shit, i just need to know that someone is gonna listen.

May 5, 2009 - Kevin Smith
Assistant Producer/Call Screener Mike interviews Kevin Smith for his "The Mike Show" segment. Writer/Director Kevin Smith calls in to discuss internet trolls, people who don't like his movies and his upcoming project 'A Couple of Dicks'.
This interview is completely surreal and highly recommended. For those who don't listen to The Best Show, Tom notoriously hates Kevin Smith and constantly rants about him on air. As it turns out, A.P. Mike was the first internet hater Kevin Smith ever encountered (as B. Buster on his View Askew message board). They talk about their history, how Mike posted that he was a terrible director and how Smith actually got upset over it. The whole thing is pretty incredible and it shows that Kevin Smith is a sport to even take the interview.

Ryan Adams Unfair Record Review - December 2, 2003
Tom reviews the body of work of Ryan Adams on air. If you've yet to get into the cynical sarcastic point of view of Scharpling's rants, this is one of my favorites. This clip is linked from The Best Show Gems Podcast. They choose "greatest hits" and post them for download. Search on iTunes or peep the feed at feed://www.wfmu.org/podcast/BD.xml.
