if you could throw up some descriptions of the movies too, that'd be appreciated.

try these:

long good friday - best british organized crime movie

the general

croupier

italian job (origian with michael cane) if you don't mind a little comedy, it's rediculously entertaining

I would recommend The Lavender Hill Mob & The Lady Killers like The Italian Job but they're more comedy capers than straight laced. Classics though.

The alley chase scene is Face was filmed in my old neighbourhood. Not a real fan of that film.

But Kingsley as scarily awesome as his performance was, did have lots of comedic value in plenty of his scenes e.g. the airplane incident and the subsequent interview with security are just hilarious along with how he wakes up Ray Winstone's character in the morning.

Get Carter and The Krays are far more straight laced gangster dramas and far more chilling too.

get carter

long good friday

shooters-about the gangster scene in liverpool, security firms, kidnappings, drug crews and that type of shit, they use authentic road(street) niggas and gangsters to play the parts too, its hard to find, but a very authentic film

essex boys-the ending is bare corny, but the build up to it is decent, its based on a true story and the murders of certain gangsta's stemming from a drug feud

those are the ones i recommend

layer cake-i couldn't watch the whole of it, the beginning started heavy like, they were talking on real authentic shit about how gangsta's in the 70's turned from robbing banks and into the drug game, but its daniel craig(james bond) narrating it and acting in it as the main lead, which i couldn't get into, because of his posh accent, i just wern't buying him as a working class gangsta, it didn't drop

eastern promises-again, it starts off well, it breaks down about how the russian mafia gets down in london, very authentic, but i couldn't watch the whole movie, because they were into underage sex trafficking, plus the main guy is a undercover fed, theirs no one to root for and that scene were they start fighting in the bath house, but 'naked(did they have to do that)', kinda put me off and i couldn't watch the rest of it, but it seems like a good movie, don't pay any attention to me, ha ha, viggo mortenson merks it too, he's a proper character actor

Most of the good ones have been said already, I think Snatch, Get Carter and A Long Good Friday are about as good a starting point as possible. Most all of the movies mentioned so far are good though.

Another recent good one that hasn't been mentioned yet is In Bruges (i know they are Irish and not English before somebody tries to correct me, it still fits with the rest of these movies)

You really liked that? Kind of fell in the same bracket to me as Rise of the Foot Soldier & Outlaw.

Gettin Square - this one is an Aussie movie but if you liked Lock Stock and Snatch you'll probably dig this one too. It stars the super slept on Timothy Spall and the rest are Aussies including new Hollywood "it" boy, Sam Worthington who was recently in the new Terminator and will be in Avatar and Clash of the Titans later this year.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0341376/

Plot:

Gettin' Square is about starting over, keeping clean and going straight. Barry Wirth (Sam Worthington) is fresh out of prison and determined to stay on the straight and narrow. But like his mate Johnny 'Spit' Spiteri (David Wenham) and reformed gangster turned restaurateur Dabba (Timothy Spall), he finds out the hard way that there are old scores and a few new ones that'll make getting square a lot harder than he thought.

I can co-sign The General (a must see, think Scorsese does Irish gangsters), Sexy Beast, and The Limey. I'm embarrassed to say I've never seen The Long Good Friday, but I have it on my netflix queue.

A film that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, which is by the guy who directed Croupier and Get Carter. It's a crime film that does an excellent job at creating and sustaining a haunting, almost dreamlike mood. It has Clive Owen, Malcolm McDowell, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. It was on my Top 10 list the year it came out.

mood is the only thing that movie gets right, i omitted it on purpose. i'm a huge fan of Hodges and Owen, but both have done far far superior work together and separately.

lol at people recommending the limey because it has a british dude in the lead, that's an american movie through and through

I'm all for the inclusion of the irish in this. and to moolah, I've seen snatch and lock stock smoking barrel. It's just movies from my childhood. My mom was insanely religious and wouldn't let me watch or listen to anything that wasn't strictly religious. When she went to prison, I was put in a series of foster homes where we didn't exactly have movie nights so I missed most 80's movies.

it's actually a love story at heart, wrapped into some heist stuff and a awesome/hilarious turn by Kingsley
