Pick Your Favorite Coen Brothers Film
With True Grit not too far off, it's about that time to pick a Coen Bros film in this week's director poll.

Fargo or No Country, depending on which movie I saw last. They're legitimate Top 50 of All Time movies.
Burn After Reading and Serious Man are criminally underrated though. They're every bit as good as the other Coen Brothers movies that people call classic (Miller's Crossing, Lebowski, Blood Simple, etc).

I don't how that's a LOL, considering that a strong case can be made that both movies are Top 3 movies of their respective decades.Comedy Quaddafi wrote:LOLIcesickle wrote:Fargo or No Country, depending on which movie I saw last. They're legitimate Top 50 of All Time movies.

I wouldn't call it a LOL but its a bit too early in the game to be making "of all time" statements. I disagree with your other point about BAR and Serious Man though, don't think either one of them is touching Miller's Crossing or Lebowski. I need to rewatch A Serious Man a second time though admittedly.Icesickle wrote:I don't how that's a LOL, considering that a strong case can be made that both movies are Top 3 movies of their respective decades.Comedy Quaddafi wrote:LOLIcesickle wrote:Fargo or No Country, depending on which movie I saw last. Also, is anyone else at least a little worried about True Grit? Obviously I trust the Coen's track record and Jeff Bridges is an excellent actor, but his character's voice sounds a bit hokey in the trailers, and seems like something that will bug the shit out of me over the course of an entire movie. I could be overreacting though.

I don't believe you're informed or knowledgeable enough to make statements like that, especially since you only seem to comment on modern American movies. I could be wrong though.Icesickle wrote:I don't how that's a LOL, considering that a strong case can be made that both movies are Top 3 movies of their respective decades.Comedy Quaddafi wrote:LOLIcesickle wrote:Fargo or No Country, depending on which movie I saw last. i'm worried but not for the same reason as you are. i'm worried simply because they've been on a roll of high quality work and are statistically due for a dip. and this has all the trademarks of something that looks so good on paper that it can't possibly actually live up to its own promise
http://www.steadybloggin.com - some of these are my thoughts yo
Assuming I'd never seen a single movie before 1990, I think it wouldn't be a stretch to assume that both movies were Top 50 All Time just based off the fact that they're so high up there compared to movies of their respective decades, bro. Most of the ardent film geeks on here would probably admit that The Coens are at least Top 20 directors of all time, so I don't see why putting their two best films in the Top 50 is LOL worthy, unless you're one of those assholes that drops a Top 10 of 1960 list when someone asks you what your Top 10 movies of the year are.Comedy Quaddafi wrote:I don't believe you're informed or knowledgeable enough to make statements like that, especially since you only seem to comment on modern American movies. For the record, I watch old movies, just not at the same clip as some other people on the board.

i always thought Barton Fink was a brilliant movie.
tony shalhoub is hilarious in this.
- Look, you confused? You need guidance? Talk to another writer.
- Who?
- Jesus, throw a rock in here, you'll hit one. And do me a favor, Fink: throw it hard!

The thing about Icemond Whitesickle is that he is absolutely correct. Name me 49 better films than either Fargo or NCFOM? You could get close but once you go into the 30's and early 40's I guarantee I could argue that either of those films are better.
I think True Grit will be remarkable for a couple of reasons. 1. It's right in their wheelhouse, the subject matter, characters, and plot all scream for the Coen's touch. 2. NCFOM started a streak of brilliance that makes you think it's not luck but rather "we figured this shit out!" 3. Because of that streak of brilliance studios are basically giving them full and absolute control over their projects. This has spelled disaster for many other filmmakers, see Planet Terror/Deathcar(orwhateverthefuckthatshitstormwascalled) and Michael Cimino. BUT I think the Coen's could be considered the exception not the rule, A Serious Man, after further views, is so rich and full of context, subtext, and depth that I'm not sure I will ever be able to see it enough. 4. As far as commercial successes go, Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges and a role once played by John Wayne will bring out EVERY demographic.
