not a total waste of time but more romance and drama than I'd want from late 80s early 90s bullet ballet. albeit IIRC it does work better at that than many other movies that try for serious drama when they should've just stuck to shooting.

this just looks wonderful. the first one was ok, fun but nothing really special. but the raid apparently really got everybody working hard over there

Kim Jee-Woon made a new film which looks like a period actiondrama http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4914580/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_1

Ringo Lam made a new film that I haven't seen either http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3801934/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_3

Dante Lam made a warfilm that looks cool http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6044910/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_1

When you've seen The Raid 2 there's no going back IMO :( It's like it was almost too good and ruined all similar movies because of it.

Been dying to see Age Of Shadows, heard nothing but great things.

Wild City was pleasant but not particularly memorable

There was a new Johnie To movie last year, it had mixed reviews. Should be out here around spring time

Agree that Raid 2 kinda spoiled us, the bar has been raised maybe too high. But then again, the last time the bar was raised like that was Ong Bak and it led to a resurgence in quality all over, so theoretically the future should be bright.

Headshot is my #1 hottest anticipated thing at the moment

there hasn't been that much memorable shit coming out, but Netflix has been surprisingly good with getting it up when it makes it over here (pause)

Killzone 2 aka ShaPoLang 2 probably stuck out the most last year and it's on there

Forgot about Headshot but its also near the very top of my wishlist. The director Timo Tjahjanto actually made a segment for the anthology VHS2 ("Safe Haven") with Gareth Evans (The Raid), which is jawdropping incredible too IMO.

Killers from a few years ago was another good action-thriller by Tjahjanto. Its a really messed up and intense film.

Safe Haven was the best thing about that movie.

this looks like a good possibility

curious who did the choreography, it looks similar to the stylized but loose brawling in City Of Violence

Headshot is incredible, maybe better than both Raids. Not as epic in scope, the story is as bare bones as the first Raid, but the fights are as good or better than in either installment and more brutal. Having gore horror directors at the helm really pays off in the violence as expected, and also has an added bonus of really great and menacing villains.

enjoy

The Raid 2
Headshot
The Raid

For me.

The plot here is exactly like I like it for this kind of movie. Simple with a single protagonist. I liked the scenes in the prison, the restaurant (?) and on the bus a lot, but also at the policestation. The treeclimbing hipsterninja was cool too. Some of the facehacking gore was insane.

I don't remember if the trailer for The Prison ever showed up on the board but this sounds fire. Big fan of asian gangster movies that aren't specifically martial arts oriented but still throw in some good brawling just to spice things up

this trailer is so batshit

the first one was pretty bad, but I'm optimistic for this one. apparently somehow The Russo brothers helped with directing some of it

seeing the Villainess this sunday, really looking forward to it. first first-person POV action movie I've been hyped for.

The action is pretty phenomenal, the opening might be one of my favorite fight scenes shot this century and the rest is up there with it. The camera work and editing stood out more than the actual choreography -, it's a crazy mix of 1st person pov, the fluid 'roll with the move but still keep the camera steady' style of Raid 2 and the more frantic and shaky fast cutting of the Bourne movies. On paper that sounds like an incomprehensible mess but the director pulls it off, the movement is easy to follow and figure out who is hitting who and you get plenty of good OHSHIT moments.

The movie itself is too long and kind of a melodramatic mess, I'm pretty sure it was directly influenced by Korean soap operas. Not enough to ruin it, the good outweighs the bad, but the middle does sag and there are some serious eyeroll moments. The schmaltz does pay off with one of the most wildly nihilistic WTF moments I've ever seen outside of a Hong Kong CatIII movie though, so that's something.

Very happy with it overall, it was definitely worth seeing.

A cheap but very entertaining homage to the sleazier side of 70s japanese karate movies and cheap Hong Kong/Taiwanese bashers. Feels like a Sonny Chiba movie at times, which is probably the best compliment you can pay something like this. The fights are actually really good too, which helps smooth out the other deficiencies. I gotta see Gun Woman, this director might be an emerging trash auteur.

saw this a few days ago and it's as crazy as the trailers make it seem, pretty much everything you want from an over the top Asian action movie. classic HK stunts and hand to hand shit mixed with cartoonishly overblown F&F-type large scale set pieces and the now obligatory heaping of Chinese nationalism. I loved it, highly recommended

it's apparently on its way to being the highest grossing Chinese movie of all time or something like that. the screening I went to was nearly sold out, which almost never happens for other Asian action movies I get to see in theaters. the room was at least 90% Chinese people

Anyone willing to give a top ten of all time or current Asian action flicks? Got a long weekend coming up and have been meaning to dive more into this genre

this popped up on netflix like 2 days after I copped a chinatown bootleg

It's decent but not great, some really cool action scenes but it's balls deep into the overt nationalism that has been permeating and shaping Chinese movies in the last few years (and it's not even overcranked jingoistic fun kind like in Wolf Warrior 2). Instead of rogue badasses who play by their own rules you get wholesome officers who kinda play by their own rules but only as long as it glorifies China and makes their families proud. One scene during a break in the action features the two leads taking a selfie together to send their kids, and that really stuck with me as an example of how these movies are now. Pretty far cry from the gritty stuff Lam was making around the turn of the decade.

standouts for recent stuff that you can probably find on streaming platforms

Raid 1/2
Headshot
Drug War
Killzone 2
Fire Of Conscience
Kung Fu Jungle (aka Kung Fu Killer)

I think Hard Boiled and The Killer are on Netflix these days, those are literally the 2 best asian action movies ever made if you've never seen them
