Rank these revenge-themed movies

Post by Comedy Quaddafi »

Just 10 revenge-themed movies, I tried to mix it up a bit, how would you rank them? If you haven't seen some of them just leave them out.

Man On Fire
Deathwish
Old Boy
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
The Crow
Sleepers
Taken
Gladiator
Straw Dogs
Irreversible

I don't feel like Sleepers or Gladiator are really revenge flicks in comparison to some of the others mentioned, although both are good dramas. As for Straw Dogs, really good movie but pretty dated imo. Irreversible is one of the weirdest most disturbing movies i've ever seen and because of that I don't think of it as a revenge flick, although I understand thats the underlying theme. Taken is awesome, especially the unrated version, so is man on fire, and oldboy is pretty much the definition of a bad ass revenge flick

You're right, I tried to pick movies of different genres with themes of revenge, where it's a motivation for the character(s) at some point. Might make them more difficult to rank, but it's just according to what your favorites are really.

In order of personal preference:

The Crow
Straw Dogs
The Road Warrior
Old Boy
Taken
Gladiator
Irreversible
Man On Fire
Deathwish
Sleepers

All are good films though. Deathwish is low only cause the first one is pretty tame compared to the rest. And yeah, I really like The Crow that much, fuck you.

Not to really nitpick either, but Straw Dogs is hardly a revenge movie either, Hoffmans just pushed to the brink of finally being a man and defending himself.

#3 is my favorite. I'd say #2 and #5 have the same sort of vibe as the first.

Why is that a :fail:? Cause its not at the top of my list? I like all the movies in this poll and DW is a classic, i just prefer some of the sequels.

I still have literally no idea what the hell you are getting at. DW1 is the best film in the series, but not the most fun to watch. Why is that so hard to understand?

Sleepers is fucking awesome. The goat Kevin Bacon role.

I'll have to check these out:

Old Boy
Taken
Irreversible

I'm generally not up on post-2000 shit.

i'm not explaining it well and maybe being too judgemental

in my mind, dw1 exists completely separately from the sequels. the og is maybe the greatest revenge movie ever, for multiple reasons. the rest are live action road runner cartoons, amazingly entertaining, but minor as far as teh subgenre as a whole.

btw, i strongly recommend this:

anybody else care to weigh in on this?

there is definitely some gay stuff goin on near the beginning of this movie but I don't think its as bad as its been presented. I only saw the flick once but the stuff that sticks out to me definitely has nothing to do with the "gayer" stuff goin on

I've never seen Irreversible.

Death Wish

Old Boy
Taken
Man On Fire

Straw Dogs

Everything else

and unless i'm completely forgetting something, the road warrior isn't a revenge movie.

I sat through the shirtless volleyball scene in Top Gun, so I think that I could probably hang.

Of course, Val and Tom weren't making out and caressing one another - if that's the type of shit that's going on in "Irreversible", then I'll definitely take a pass. It's just awkward viewing. That's really the heart of the matter.

So yeah, please elaborate on the gay stuff.

I'll be honest with you, Roy. I almost hit eject during the first ten minutes of Irreversible. It was largely due to the disorientating camera that made me nauseous but yeah, the gay club scenes, the tranny and a very graphic rape scene made me feel a bit uncomfortable and it doesn't exactly make it the first choice when you've got buddies round your place and they're asking to see a movie.

There are many reasons to NOT see Irreversible, the gayness is barely one of them.

Hmm, maybe I made a slight mess of this. If you google for "best revenge movie" both Straw Dogs and Gladiator pop up on many lists. Wanted to include movies people have seen.

Regrettably, I've haven't seen Ol Boy yet so I can't really comment, knowing how good that movie is supposed to be.

Agree that Death Wish 1 is way better than all the sequels, however, Deathwish 4: The Crackdown is way more entertaining solely based on how terrible it is... 'so bad it's funny' at its best.

Classic.

BTW, anybody here ever read the overtly racist novel Death Wish?

:larry: #3 is way more entertaining. There's a high-five during an attempted gang rape, a lady who dies from complications due to a broken arm, Charlie eating the mandatory icecream, the giggler, "It's my car" and "I was making a sandwich" and "Chicken's good. I like chicken" and an overall completely paranoid and hysterical feeling.

Revenge movie is such an open category with so many movie genres that cater to that theme. Maybe a vigilante movies thread might have been what you were looking to focus on.

Interesting thing about Death Wish IV is it's director J. Lee Thompson had an incredible filmography.

Great line right here from the fourth installment.

Word, I haven't seen any of them but 1 in ages. When you're right you're right...

However,

<object width="480" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/L38d8P6Y8rU?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/L38d8P6Y8rU?fs ... n_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="390"></embed></object>

And I remember another hilarious scene where blows up a druglab, but can't find it online.

Yeah, I wasn't referring to the whole movie being gay, just the first ten minutes are extremely gay and take place in a S&M club with all sorts of graphic depictions mixed with the camera like Spartan mentioned plus some crazy reverb soundtrack.....if you can make it through the beginning though, the rest of the movie is a walk in the park.

Watch it, man. At least you won't forget it, even if you hate it. That's an achievement in itself IMO.

I like Dead Man's Shoes, the movie is class. One of the best Britflicks from the last decade (which I've seen). Considine is very good too.
