Essential Blu rays to own in your opinion

i need some suggestions. i been building up my collection recently with some classic like Halloween, Psycho, and 2001 a Space odyssey. Anything reasonable will be taken into account. i'm thinking stuff that'll really show the great picture with smooth transfer and superior sound.

All the Pixar movies look fantastic, prob Ratatouille best though.
I see you picked up a few Criterions, they're all great some of my favorites would be Days of Heaven, Repulsion, Army of Shadows, Videodrone....Le Cercle Rouge comes out next week and I'm sure it will kick ass in HD.
Get all the Kubricks, The Shining specifically is
The Godfather restorations are also really really beautiful
And you kindof have to buy Planet Earth if you have a BR player.

The Apocalypse Now full disclosure set (both versions of movie in new HD masters plus Heart of Darkness)
Speed Racer is like the greatest shit ever, esp if you have an LCD.

Will be awhile, but blu-ray is future proof imo especially now that some companies are starting to convert from 4k scans.

Bluray isn't just to make things shiny and shit, the #1 benefit really is the significantly improved resolution which allows there to be much more detail in the picture than on dvd. Yojimbo was shot on 35mm film, which was and still is pretty much the preferred film stock of the industry so you would see the same uptick in clarity in Yojimbo as you would something like Apocalypse Now which was also shot on 35mm. The only thing that keeps some older movies from being capable of getting crystal clear HD releases are the quality of the prints that are still around from back in the day.

Regarding which Criterions are going to be rereleased with bluray editions in the near future.....
Criterion started making HD masters of all their prints right around spine number 350, right about when they changed from the old logo style to the "wacky C" style. So all of the releases since then that haven't gotten blu-ray releases already are very excellent candidates to be rereleased since they don't have to do any remastering of prints. If you look at what they've been rereleasing so far, they've definitely been cherrypicking from these titles the most.
Anything that came out before that they need to make a new print for each movie which costs a lot of money so they obviously are going to keep picking off the big name titles that they know are going to sell a lot first.

No way they ever rerelease their entire catalog though. A lot of stuff they no longer have rights to and some stuff they only have dvd rights to and not blu-ray rights.

Best way to keep track of what is coming up is their facebook page and the thread on the criterion forum about rumored releases.

Despite the abundance of overall shite I own, I'm still perfectly content with my DVD collection and it's a relatively cheap way of not getting burnt too much with certain blind purchases.

Newer movie titles get copped by me on blu ray with only a handful of older genre stuff getting purchased based on blu ray reviews.

Ultimately, buying older titles available on blu ray is usually based on the films themselves, who directed them and if the publisher has issued an improved HD transfer that's worthy of me wanting to part any cash. Region locking is also a major hurdle since my blu ray player is still locked and makes me shed borkian tears.

My blu-ray policy is pretty much only buy it if it's on sale(as far as new releases and special editions), but most of the time I only really stick to the $9.99 stuff at best buy and walmart.

I got my first Blu-ray player in January and have over 40 discs. I have yet to watch any of them, yet I keep buying them.

I can honestly say that I have no idea how much of a difference Blu-ray has over DVD.

I've become a disc hoarder.

I know I'll watch them eventually, especially since I have quite a few discs that were blind buys.

The ease of streaming Netflix just makes me too lazy to grab something off of my shelf.
