I've seen some really good French-Canadian films last year. Never seen a good English-language Canadian film though.
Ever hear of a guy named David Cronenberg?

How about Atom Egoyan (I stopped following him a while ago actually but I like some of the early stuff) or Guy Maddin?

Merde! Comely mammaries just aren't the same on dvd.

+ on the cult/exploitation side black christmas, my bloody valentine, hobo with a shotgun (eisenberg in general seems like most promising director for this kind of thing working right now)

My Bloody Valentine, Prom Night, Terror Train etc were generally filmed in Canada for tax reasons. They were largely funded with US dollars from a US studio. Canadian or American, you can make a valid argument for both in my book.

madden might be the best pick for the argument simply because he makes good movies that are explicitly canada-scentric

set in Greece by a prominent Greek director, which all put together kind of enforces my point even further, all that really matters for the purpose of this thread is the language spoken in the film.

ahhh see but the devil is in the details there... it's not actually literally set in Greece, it's heavily implied of course but CG makes a point to leave the setting unnamed

which for purposes of thread doesn't mean dick, it's def french enough. but i always enjoyed that little passive-agressive angle of it

Yeah its wasn't filmed in Greece because they couldn't, it was too critical of the Greek government and loosely based on real events, Gravas obv intended for everyone to understand that thats where the movie took place.

all smugkidnesss and technicalites aside, its easily one of the goat political conspiracy thrillers

It wouldnג€™t be wrong to identify CG as a French film director since thatג€™s where he was trained and certainly most of his career was French-based. Been sleepin on his shit- Special Section (episode of Vichy govtג€™s anti-Resistance history) was I think even better than Z as was State of Siege. Not better in terms of thrillers but of historical coverup films. His early stuff should really be dvd'ed

I rewatched Missing not too long ago and apart from not being better than Battle of Chile, it was pretty astounding that it was a "Hollywood" film depicting the US involvement in the Chilean coup. Really great perf by Lemmon

^yeah, Section Special is another brilliant costa gavras.

that one where Yves Montand is interrogated by the ruskies is also really good. Been a long time since I saw that one.

No love for Le Doulos in the Melville crowd?

I'd take it over Le Cercle Rouge but not Army of Shadows nor Le Samourai.

What about Cocteau's work: Beauty and the Beast, Orpheus?
