Hanks was a good sign.

Berry was a bad one.

It's either going to be great or a huge turd.

Interesting to see what the Wachowski sisters and Tykwer do together (nh).

looks interesting, at the very least on the visual scale, but i'm skeptical based on an over five minute trailer that has me confused as to what the fuck the movie is actually about. is that the hook?

book takes 6 different lives in 6 different time periods (ascending time periods for first half of book, then descending to bring it back around). every section is written in a completely different writing style (lost journal entry, romantic, detective story, light hearted romp, cyberpunk, post apocalyptic future in that order). Everything ties together and has an eerie sense of serendipity, and each character has a comet birthmark. Many events tie into each other in a "snowball effect through time'" type of way.

'cloud atlas' refers to the idea that one could map or trace the the manifestations of their lives by the clouds. killer book, I have doubts of how well it will translate.

Someone forgot to tell Hugo Weaving that he's not still playing Agent Smith.

Looks pretty great. Have a lot of faith in the Wachowskis. Tykwer has been very hit or miss in his career.

even with my generally low standards for spy themed action thrillers (i LOVE spy game) and uncomfortably prominent mancrush on clive owen I hated the international. and i'm a big fan of at least 3 of his movies (that i know of) to boot

Yeah I didn't care for it either. What's the third movie you like then? Assuming the other two are Perfume (which I thought was great) and Run Lola Run (which I revisted last month and hasn't aged as well as i hoped, too much a product of its time)

princess and the warrior. offbeat stuff but enjoyable

not surprised lola didnt' age well, most of the 90s indy boom canon didn't. they're all very very dated

Am I the only one that thought, all things considered, Speed Racer was pretty good?

On this forum yeah. I've had some people give me some strange looks when I've championed it offline though.

nah, i know we love it on this forum.

but the movie fucking tanked that summer, and didn't earn shit in the real world, compared to their Matrix success

:bunk:

i watched Speed Racer as a kid sometimes. i LOVED that movie when it came out, i fuckin shed tears watching the climax ("okay Mr. 2 Time world champion all track so-and-so... TEACH ME SOMETHING" :rockout: ), and it blew my god damn skull open watching it on acid once

Yes but make sure you watch it on a really good setup. Big TV (preferrably LCD imo because it amplifies the bright color scheme even more) with a good sound system. Its mostly amazing because of the visual experience/incredibly unique use of CGI. The story is pretty silly but fun.

Most of the masses that give me shit regarding SR haven't actually seen it.

i enjoyed the story specifically for how earnest and straight forward and blatantly cartoonish it was. no foolish misplaced attempts attempts at a forced 'dark and edgy' or worse 'realistic' narrative, just a simple story of good guys and bad guys, very fitting to both the legacy of the source material and the movie itself. and people shitted on it specifically for that reason, because Speed was just a nice kid trying to win honestly and not some damaged drug addict struggling with issues in the midst of a moral grey area or some similar nonsense. i couldn't believe that.

Yeah, I loved how earnest it was. That was the film's most compelling quality for me.

My only gripe was that there seemed to be some conflict over the target audience, so you have a few scenes with the kid and the ape specifically shooting for kids that came off as really corny. You cut out like 5 minutes, and it's gravy.

the book this is based on is really great. highly recommended. the trailer makes the movie seem less smart and more schmaltzy.
