Dunno much about anime, but I have a nephew obsessed with Dante from Devil May Cry.
We play a lot of Marvel vs Capcom 3, so that's his only exposure to the character.
I was gonna buy him the Devil May Cry series on dvd, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate for a little kid.

good find sample, i love the OG Vampire Hunter D but have never seen bloodlust

for space operas, I'd cosign all iterations of Cowboy Bebop (that shit is beyond anime, it's like a genre onto itself) and both Ghost In The Shell movies. However I'd switch Gundam out for Space Adventure Cobra, which is a wacked out psychedelic masterpiece of a movie from the 80s that just popped up on dvd.

Also, lupin the 3rd errryyythannnnggg. That's not genre specific, it's just awesome in every way and incredibly entertaining

I have the Lupin movie Seijun Suzuki directed waiting for me to watch at home, I need to get off my ass and do that soon.

The Samurai 7 series is really really great. Its admirable how well they stay true to the original story & characters even though the setting is radically altered and has robots and shit. Way better than I thought it could be.
The Vampire D movies were the first anime movies I watched that convinced me the genre wasn't for fags and virgins. Big fan.

Underrated good vs. evil choice would be the Karas movies (The Prophecy & The Revelation). Great visuals and lots of mindfucking, just make sure to watch them at the same time or it might be hard to make sense of it all.
Another good one is Wicked City, if you like Ninja Scroll then check it out, it's from the same director.
Cosign Random's mention of Tekkonkinkreet which is also a really awesome good vs evil story (the main characters are literally named White and Black).

i've sifted through a shitload of anime and there's a lot i can't stand but also a good amount that's worth seeking out. of course, some obvious picks that's been mentioned are the first Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV series.)

Cowboy Bebop is necessary, by far the greatest anime series of all time. no description necessary, you just need to watch. Samurai Champloo was Shinichiro Watanabe's next show. great soundtrack and animation but overall, not in the same league as Bebop. His new series Kids On the Slope is currently airing in Japan but it's nothing like his previous efforts. it's about a bunch of high school kids who form a jazz band...chock full of cliche japanese teenage melodrama and the storyline doesn't really go anywhere. the music segments are dope but overall the show is laughably bad, especially for a work that's helmed under Watanabe.

the G.O.A.T. animated motion picture is Princess Mononoke. anything Miyazaki is worth watching but Mononoke is his masterpiece. Spirited Away is a close second followed by My Neighbor Totoro or Howl's Moving Castle. Grave of the Fireflies is another classic done by Studio Ghibli, also required viewing.

a gem that doesn't get enough attention is Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal. we were listing top 3 samurai anime and this movie/OVA shits on 'em all. it's starkly different than the TV series (which can be a bit cheesy at times.) it's a dark and raw portrayal of all the shit that happens prior to the storyline of the TV show. it isn't necessary to watch the show beforehand (and it's something like 66 episodes) but it adds a lot to the appreciation of the movie. the animation is among the best in the genre. i believe the entire thing is streamable on youtube. here's a trailer:




i don't see it mentioned often but those who dig Tekkonkinkreet should check out Mind Game. it's the precursor to Tekkonkinkreet made by the same people and the animation style and fucked up storyline are both intact. i'd say the movie is just as good too. a friend of mine once described these joints as Wes Anderson doing anime, which i think is spot on.

Satoshi Kon is also a legend in the game (r.i.p.) and my favorite by him is Paprika, which is basically an animated version of Inception. Tokyo Godfathers and Perfect Blue are also worth watching but not as good imo.

+1 to Wicked City and Ninja Scroll. classic material by one of the greats Yoshiaki Kawajiri. he also did Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, which i feel is a great deal better than the original Vampire Hunter. Kawajiri's animation is top notch and he always comes with the rawest villain designs.

finally, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade is also fuckin' dope. i'm posting a video to the trailer because even though the the story is a bit perplexing and ambiguous, the airbrushed animation makes it worth watching:

about kenshin.. most die hard fans hate trust and betrayal. I, like you, thinks its dope as fuck. i dont like the series because he's a pussy in it, but the OVA is amazing.

Jin Roh, i'm mad i didnt mention it, but there isnt much fuckin with how dark it is.

Redline is ill is u want some crazy speedracer-esque action, its also what the most recent black dynamite was paying homage to.

wonderful days is some korea a dope korean animated film, and so is aachi and ssipak if u want some weird asian shit.

Spriggan, Paprika, and summer wars, are decent jawns also.

watched Sword of the Stranger last night, great mixture of gore and art. to bad that kid was such a faggot, made most of the non action scenes almost unwatchable.


next on my viewing list are the Evangelion movies, then probably Tales from Earthsea though I have heard it was a shambles. but I recently saw From Up on Poppy Hill and enjoyed it so I may as well give Goro a chance.

I like Mononoke, but I actually prefer Nausicaa. If you haven't seen it, I recommend it highly.

yeah vampire hunter d 2, bebop and akira pretty much made me feel the same way
