in retrospect it's a bit surprising nobody ever applied the die hard formula to the white house before this

also a bit of a shame because if somebody thought of this 10-15 years ago we might have gotten somebody better than Butler for the job. he'll do though

Shit there are two White House attack movies coming out at the same time?

White House Down with Channing Tatum & Jamie Fox as the president, directed by Roland Emmerich comes out next year too.

^^ that one is clearly tghe 'deep impact' of the two because it has a black president

jokes aside, i have much more faith in Fuqua doing an action movie than Emmerich

Honestly, neither director instills a ton of confidence in me at this point but only one of them has prior experience at blowing up the White House.

I like Fuqua, he has a very decent track record that he rarely gets credit for:

Training day is great but Denzel always gets the credit for it
Shooter is one of best random action movies of the 00s
Brooklyn's Finest is too long and a little unfocused but otherwise a fine crime drama
Tears of the Sun is a solid war/action drama, not too shabby

so he seems like a good candidate to churn out competent entertaining time fillers liek this white house thing

My girlfriend saw the tatum one. She said it's the armageddon to this one's deep impact. jamie Foxx does an obama impression as president.

Gerard Butler sucks.
Should have got The Rock.
Matter a fact should have casted The Rock as the president and have him take back America single handedly.

This is old school action at its finest. This movie if released in 96 would more then hold its own in the conversation. They did not water down the language at all or the action which is a huge change of pace. Very surprised how great this turned out. I was worried that the N Koreans as the only bad guys allowed anymore would hurt the film but it actually worked out as a fairly believable backstory.

Good flick. Couldn't help watching as a die hard movie though. Barefoot shot of sec of defense sealed it.

My only real beef was the blood squibs weren't as brutal as I would have liked. It's already a hard R movie, why not put a little more gusto into showing bits of internal organs oozing out of people after getting shot? They would need a shovel to pick up what's left of someone after getting hit with 30mm cannon fire.

Also, loved the plot decisions, namely to get that little kid out of the picture half-way through and to not have a "mole in the gov't" subplot exploring just how NK got their hands on top secret weapons systems (sidenote: I love how the classified weapon was just an even bigger gatling gun that could be loaded on a hydraulic lift that conveniently goes to the top of the White House).

Fuck, this movie gets better the more I think about it...

With a few small changes this would have made a great Die Hard sequel. John shows up to the white house to receive some kind of medal when all hell breaks lose and has to save the day yet again.

^^^ very true. This would be a great 'Die Hard' sequel, actually, and it's a more satisfyingly epic cinematic creation than 'A Good Day to Die Hard', as much as I enjoyed the McClane Clan in Moscow.

'Olympus Has Fallen' is one of the best action movies in years. Probably going to be 2013's 'Dredd' for me.

This movie might beat 'The Expendables 2' in sheer bullet-riddled body count. Holy innocent civilian death, Batman.

Can't believe they managed to squeeze in a few great jokes between all the nearly non-stop gunfire.

Gerard Butler lucked out in scooping this role, and Aaron Eckhart held shit down with Angela Bassett and Morgan Freeman in the "make this mind-numbingly brutal military assault on the White House seem frighteningly believable". I was also thinking 'if they got Dwayne Johnson to star in this movie, it woulda cleared 50 million its first weekend'. Either way, $30 mil ain't too shabby.

Quite the potent phallic symbolism to have the Washington Monument circumcised like so, and then the falling pieces crash like piece of the Twin Towers in 9/11... after the U.S. Flag on the White House is shot up by that drive-by Korean kamikaze gangster

Antoine Fuqua raised the bar high on this one. Great fucking action cinema.

how can you not love a North Korean airplane doing a drive-by on hundreds of citizens in Washington D.C. tho?

it updated some Die Hard tropes pretty freshly

the "don't go in through the roof!" error was awesome this time

those anti-aircraft gats were SIIIICK :copy:
