It might be the single most influential film ever when you consider things.
You can walk up in most stores today and still see Star War items for sale. The franchise hasn't disappeared in over three decades.
I was thinking how in our culture Star Wars, Batman, Superman are still relevant today, mainly because of the continuation of the movies but still, Darth Vader as a figure is no less powerful today than he was years ago. My son, who is just over two is more infatuated with Vader and Boba Fett than Mickey, Elmo or anything see on Sprout.
It made me think that there hasn't been a movie since those 80s classics that has the staying power like Star Wars.

To add on, Godfather, Scarface and Rocky all have strong relevance today.

Jaws.
You can't go to the beach or a swimming pool without hearing someone humming that John Williams score. Ironically, most kids probably have never even seen a Jaws movie, yet they know the music and the name.

Re: Is there any film with greater longevity than Star Wars?
it's tricky to compare something like Kane or Casablanca to something like Star Wars
both had huge impacts, both shaped the very concept of what a modern movie is, but in different times and because of this very different ways

Yeah i think people are getting off what gloss was getting at. Kane is influential in a filmmaking sense, but not in a modern culture sense.
CK is great but 95% of people are straight up not watching that shit if you put it on and at least 80% of them probably don't even know what the fuck it is.

deadass true but there is a great bit of irony here that a good chunk of people would recognize the 'rosebud' thing randomly when referenced elsewhere as a some sort of reference, even though they would likely had no idea where it originally came fromTommy Bunz wrote: CK is great but 95% of people are straight up not watching that shit if you put it on and at least 80% of them probably don't even know what the fuck it is.
as far as modern pop culture staples, Bond might actually have more reach than SW.
SW has a narrower audience than Bond, and Bond has had influence beyond just pop culture - the concept of 'Bond' has become an archetype/ideal of masculinity onto itself. I don't think anybody dressed up well and feeling good about themselves ever looked in a mirror and went 'damn I'm like Han Solo over here'

Citizen Kane is like Bladerunner to me in terms of influence on cinema while being boring movies.

Re: Is there any film with greater longevity than Star Wars?
Reason I'd put Star Wars over Bond is that everyone sweats the original SW trilogy, with Bond there's no definitive film or series of continuous films that are definitive for the character (at least that is agreed upon in a critical manner). The character of James Bond is more influential than the actual movies by far.

Re: Is there any film with greater longevity than Star Wars?
Very true, though it technically has more longevity since it was around before Star Wars and we're talking about it. I think the word or phrase Gloss meant was "pervasiveness" or "cultural relevance."Tommy Bunz wrote:Reason I'd put Star Wars over Bond is that everyone sweats the original SW trilogy, with Bond there's no definitive film or series of continuous films that are definitive for the character (at least that is agreed upon in a critical manner). Re: Is there any film with greater longevity than Star Wars?
Citizen Kane wrote the rules on how movies are made. I am hard pressed to find a movie made today that you cant directly lead back to Kane be it story structure or filming technique.
As for a more modern movie no movie is touching ID4 with the exception of the first 2 Jurassic Park movies in its influence on the business of Hollywood and that includes star wars and jaws. ID4 is the reason for 20 plex theaters and the US having 4x as many screens and about 6 times as much seating capacity. ID4 was the reason studios marketed the living hell out of movies before release to make as much money on opening weekend. ID4 is the model every tent pole uses for its marketing. Its the reason everything is PG13. Its success was the beginning of the end for the mid budget studio movie. It was the launching pad for the biggest star of the last 20 years. With Star Wars and Jaws the lesson the studios learned was basically summer is not a dead time for movies. ID4 is what made the studio system all about tent poles. One of the first mega hits overseas where the bulk of its gross was overseas at the time of its release the 3rd highest grossing movie overseas. Basically the movies coming out would look very differently in a world without ID4.
As for pop cultural impact Star Wars is it regrettably.

much of star wars immense cultural impact and staying power can be attributed to superior marketing almost separate from the original trilogy, which was of course really creative, fun and accessible to all ages on its own

I'd just like to say I've never seen Star Wars or any of the other 18,000 fucking sequel/prequel bullshit bullshit bullshit. And I never fucking will. Because fuck that stupid fucking movie. And despite that, I still know the stupid basic plot to it and recognize all the dumbass characters including that dumb trashcan and that stupid gold mannequin.
Seriously, fuck George Lucas's no-neck having ass and all that shit. Kids nowadays should not be familiar with that movie and yet they are because Episode 49 Volume 8 is coming out next summer.
Enough of that goddamn franchise already. If you jam something down enough throats for long enough, then anything can be popular.

when getting ready to go to a sex party on a night with a full moon, YOTMB has been known to look in the mirror and utter to himself: "awww sheeeit, dawg. I got it poppin' proper like Chewbacca"
another question I'd ask is:
has any movie influenced all subsequent movie making more than 'The Usual Suspects'?
like EVERYTHING has to have some sort of twist now to be worthy of being status
it got as insane as 'Inception' to show how much twisting could happen in a plot and concept

I have seen porn with better acting and plot development.

yea but by the same token watching star wars for acting and plot development is roughly the same as watching porn for acting and plot development.
