Set during the final week of the Spanish Civil War, THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE tells the tale of a ten-year-old boy who, after his freedom-fighting father is killed, is sent to a haunted rural orphanage full of terrible secrets. Robert Williams: Mr. Bitchin’ (2013)
dirs. Doug Blake, Nancye Ferguson, Michael LaFetra

Product Description:
Robert Williams was an artist in search of a movement. A prolific oil painter, whose painstakingly detailed work often featured naked women, death, destruction, booze and clowns, he didn't quite fit the fine art mold. In the early 1960s he was confronted with trendy abstraction and superficial pop art. Schooled in the Hot Rod Culture of Ed Big Daddy Roth and Von Dutch, he emerged as a leader in the Underground Comic revolution along with R. Crumb, contributing regularly to Zap Comix. His antisocial paintings of an alternative reality were marginalized by the art world for decades although he became a hero of sorts for underground artists. His notoriety exploded when his painting Appetite for Destruction was used (and much vilified) as the cover for that 1987 Guns N' Roses' album. When he started Juxtapoz Magazine in 1994, his movement found him. Legions of artists looking for a place within the contemporary art world for their cartoonish realism identified with his LowBrow aesthetic. At the time, Williams predicted that, Low brow and alternative art are the crack in the dam and with this leak the art world will never be the same.By 2010 the art world could ignore him no longer and he was included in the prestigious Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. ROBERT WILLIAMS MR. BITCHIN documents this influential artist as he rises to the top of the art world, always an outsider.

Are her mind and body strong enough to survive the agonies and ecstasies of life in the big doll house?

Banshee: The Complete First Season (2013)

Product Description:
From Alan Ball, creator/EP of True Blood, this exciting new Cinemax action drama charts the twists and turns that follow Lucas Hood (Antony Starr), an ex-convict who improbably becomes sheriff of a rural, Amish-area town while searching for a woman he last saw 15 years ago, when he gave himself up to police to let her escape after a jewel heist. Living in Banshee under an assumed name, Carrie Hopewell (Ivana Milicevic) is now married to the local DA, has two children (one of whom may be Lucas’), and is trying desperately to keep a low profile – until Lucas arrives to shake up her world and rekindle old passions. Complicating matters is the fact that Banshee is riddled by corruption, with an Amish overlord, Kai Proctor (Ulrich Thomsen), brutally building a local empire of drugs, gambling and graft. With the help of a boxer-turned-barkeeper named Sugar Bates (Frankie Faison), Lucas is able to stay on even footing with Kai and his thugs, and even manages to bring a measure of tough justice to Banshee. But eventually, Lucas’ appetite for pulling heists pulls him and Carrie into a dangerous cauldron of duplicity, exacerbated when Mr. Rabbit (Ben Cross), the NY mobster they once ripped off, closes in with vengeance on his mind.

The Fartiste (1987)
dir. Mark Ruggio

Product Description:
Get ready for an 'ass-tute' mockumentary that pays tribute to a great entertainer so legendary and so renowned that nobody remembers him. His legacy, like his unique ability, was gone with the wind.
His stage name was Le Petomane, and his ability to conjure and control his flatulence was nothing short of awe-inspiring. From behind, he could play the trumpet, blow out candles, break windows and even cause earthquakes. Now relegated to Purgatory, he recounts the highlights (and low points) of his life and career, while back on Earth there are testimonials and tributes from friends, admirers, rivals and even his therapist - Sigmund Freud.
The Fartiste (also known as A Blast from the Past) is a tour-de-force for popular character actor Michael Pataki (1938-2010), whose distinctive presence graced such blockbusters as Airport '77 (1977), Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins... (1985) and Rocky IV (1985), and such cult favorites as Dracula's Dog (1978), Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) and 1972's Grave of the Vampire. His many television appearances include Star Trek, All in the Family, The Twilight Zone and Star Trek: The Next Generation. He also directed the low-budget shocker Mansion of the Doomed (1977).
The film also features a star-studded supporting cast including Dorian Harewood (Full Metal Jacket), Jackie Vernon, Shecky Greene, Sandy Baron, Jackie Gayle, Sally Marr (the mother of comedian Lenny Bruce), Robert Sacchi and Oscar nominee Eileen Brennan as legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt, who like Le Petomane exhibited a fondness for passing wind.
BONUS: That Voodoo You Do (2012, B&W, Silent) with Tyler Spencer, Christopher Tai and directed by Andre Bennett.

What is required, I wonder, before a DVD becomes a Blu-Ray? I often cop Blu-Rays off Amazon for under ten bucks, so I assume the process is really cheap. Yet I'd think you could probably round up every person in the world who gives a shit about Peggy Sue Got Married in a New York City high school auditorium, so how does this movie justify a Blu-Ray? Moreso Fire Maidens From Outer Space, that's a forgettable movie even among 50s sci-fi buffs. How does this end up becoming a Blu-Ray? Is there some "no return" policy with Blu-Rays that makes their profit margins higher?

Has anyone seen this? Samurai cop is a trash masterpiece.

Great week of releases though. Niagara is my favorite Monroe movie by far. The Fog and Devil's Backbone are sure thing upgrades. Plus that DiLeo set.
