Nah I'm kinda with Tweak here

factors that played into TD1 wrecking house:

Fukunaga's direction
Harrelson's acting
McConoissanse
Cinematography
.
.
That one chick's boobs
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Pizzolatto's writing

Only one of these remains. So this is again an essentially unproven series. The cast is dope, I got no beef there, but the fact that there are different directors in this season the main of which is known for something that is all the way on the other side of movies/tv is def a reason to be a little cautious.

Also keep in mind that the horror/occult implications are what really kept people interested in teh plot last season. Without them it's just a detective story and Nick Pizza is really not as good of a noir writer as he thinks he is.

I'd love to be proven wrong but i'm not really counting on this to be a sure thing at all.

Let's not forget Maggie's ass either. But yeah, Lili Simmons made TD and Banshee my two favorite shows last year.

Non-ironic mustaches and brass knuckles are more than enough to sell me on the season.

I wonder if Woody ever commented about participating in that scene? He really put himself in an envious position, those things were very impressive. I understood why he was cheating but once they unveiled the boobs, you really identified with WHY he was cheating

Drizzle, I think you're really undervaluing the writing on season 1. I agree that its not as integral as some of the other factors you mentioned, but it was important to the show and consistently solid, imo

Pizzolatto wrote a whole heap of random shit that seemed cool as he was thinking it up but had no idea what to actually do with. So all that intricate build up resolved with a plot twist out of Scooby Doo, an inexplicable space anus and the revelation that about 2/3 of the plot didn't matter because it was really about friendship all along. He deserves credit for the concept, and yes that's very important to the show because without it there would be no show. But if the show was just that concept with different/lesser direction and actors it would've very likely been a disappointment.

Some of the s1 most memorable moments are actually examples of bad writing saved by direction, the shoot out most of all. After 4 episodes worth of meticulously parsed out atmospheric mystery drama, the plot randomly shifts gears into a broad (and kinda nonsensical) set up straight out of a generic action movie. BUT that leads to a brilliantly directed sequence, so the fact that it doesn't actually make much sense or fit in with the rest is easily overlooked.

This is so spot on. Not to mention he word-for-word plagiarized chunks of dialogue with his defense being essentially "philosophy can't be plagiarized." So not only is he a shitty writer, he's not even an original one.

So let's take away the best part of the series (director) and keep the worst part of the series ("writer")...yeah, good luck with all that.

Cinematography and acting does look good, no question. Looking forward to Vince sneering at shit at least.

Who knows, maybe I'm thinking wrong and the lack of the occult/conspiracy stuff will actually help Pizza, it'll give him less room to dream up shit he can't handle and thus result in a tighter narrative.

The most I can gather from any of these previews is that Taylor Kitsch isn't bald yet for some reason.

mostly positive review:

more negative review that basically confirms that you will be disappointed if you set your expectations by S1

i like the idea of this really leaning into noir and going faux-Mann instead of trying to jah-fake cosmic horror again

Decent first episode, but it's going to take another episode for me to feel fully at ease.

This seems like it's going to be much more straight forward than last season which could be problematic because they could easily fall into the gritty cop show tropes (drunk cop has to pull himself/herself together, dirty cop is owned by the bad guy etc.). Exactly what I expected from Farrell, a boisterous cop without much subtlety; pretty much what he does in every part he plays. Daddy beat down was fairly entertaining. McAdams's character seems to be the most interesting to me. Taylor Kitsch is an odd looking human being, and it was a bit too convenient for him to randomly find this dead guy. It will be interesting to see how they all play off each other in the next episode.

I was nervous about Vaughn, but he seems perfectly cast here as the likeable villain. In fact, he's probably the most likeable of the entire group of characters that was introduced. Fantastic to see the god Morse do his thing too.

I had to watch this with 2 hyper kids running around so I couldn't make out what fuck Vaughn's purpose was to Farrell. I will say McAdam's ass tho.

Ferrell telling the kid he'll buttfuck his dad with his mom's headless corpse was pretty great.
Seemed like the whole purpose of the episode was to introduce the characters and their plights. Turns out they're all messes!
Second ep should be way more telling or exactly how good or meh this show will be.

Vaughn was by far the best part of this

Otherwise I'm not sold, it felt like the show was trying too hard, especially with its ludicrously overwrought attempts at hard boiled dialogue and put upon angst. The juxtaposition of slow burn pacing with everything else dialed up to 11, to nearly self parody, was not a good look.

We'll see how it all unspools, it may very well pick up once the story becomes better developed. I have a feeling we're gonna end up wishing the whole thing was about Vince trying to negotiate his deal / figure out who killed his city manager guy as Ferrel drinks and snarls, while patiently suffering through McAddam's family backstory and groaning and eyerolling through Hackford's dick problems.

This show is so pretentious, it makes me want to fuck it. Even the music was overbearing.
