I'm judging season 2 in a vacuum: forget about season 1. True Detective 2 was good. Frank's plight was pretty damn compelling and the arch of Colin was good to very good. Sprinkle in whores, shoot out with Mexicans, corrupt cops, and a string of unstable powerful people and it was worth the price of admission

obviously it's rat shit compared to woody & Matt, but managing your expectations as a consumer is where I see the difference
Hey, by the way who's Curt?

I found Season two to be a stylized and star studded version of what I'd imagine a show like Jag to be. That's probably totally off I've never seen jag) but, yeah, in a vacuum, it still sucked to me. Shitty writing, lots of bad acting, convoluted plot and,in general, not interesting. I felt nothing for any character. I was just total bullshit with a sprinkling of decent moments/lines. Shit was garbage.

meh

even in a vacuum it sucked

any show that i find myself texting, answering emails, etc while its on just isnt engaging and that has zero to do with the first season. halfway through this season i felt like i was taking a class i hated, but had no choice but to finish

and on top of that, most of the things you mentioned as pluses were minuses in my eyes and i still cant think of one thing the show did exceptionally well

i give it a very generous 4/10

Just can't motivate myself to finish it. I have the last 4 episodes ready to go, and find myself watching garbage like Sons of Anarchy instead.

Don't bothering finishing it. Not worth it.

Rare to see an active president take personal responsibility for a show's failure like this.

HBO Pres Michael Lombardo on TD season 2:
When a show doesn’t work, how do you figure out what went wrong? I’m going to talk about a specific show, “True Detective.” The first season was extraordinary television. The second season — and you may disagree with me — but a lot of people think it was an inferior version of the first season. What are the lessons you take away?

I’ll tell you something. Our biggest failures — and I don’t know if I would consider “True Detective 2” — but when we tell somebody to hit an air date as opposed to allowing the writing to find its own natural resting place, when it’s ready, when it’s baked — we’ve failed. And I think in this particular case, the first season of “True Detective” was something that Nic Pizzolatto had been thinking about, gestating, for a long period of time. He’s a soulful writer. I think what we did was go, “Great.” And I take the blame. I became too much of a network executive at that point. We had huge success. “Gee, I’d love to repeat that next year.”

Well, you know what? I set him up. To deliver, in a very short time frame, something that became very challenging to deliver. That’s not what that show is. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Find his muse. And so I think that’s what I learned from it. Don’t do that anymore.

And I’d love to have the enviable certainty of knowing what my next year looks like. I could pencil things in. But I’m not going to start betting on them until the scripts are done.

Either he's a really stand up guy or Pizza got pics of him banging 10yos at an illuminati orgy or something, dude had every right to throw that hack under the bus.

can't wait for that other Pizza show. It's probably about a misunderstood tough but sensitive writer named Pick Nizzalotta who smokes a lot of cigs and rocks tight black tshirts while on a quest of vigilante justice against asshole tv critics.
