Best New TV Drama
It was an interesting year for new dramas on TV. Movie characters Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter got their own shows depicting what led them to become what we already knew about them. Edgar Allen Poe inspired a slew of murders. We went to New Zealand searching for a missing 12-year-old girl and it wasn't anywhere near as boring as when The Walking Dead went looking for Sophia. Netflix came out strong with their first show, House of Cards. Finally, we said goodbye to Dexter and Walter White and hello to Tatiana Maslany and Tatiana Maslany and Tatiana Maslany and Tatiana Maslany and Tatiana Maslany and Tatiana Maslany and Tatiana Maslany.
Now it's time to vote for this year's R.O.Y.

Re: Best New TV Drama
Of these I watched:
The Americans
Bates
Hannibal
House of Cards
Quickly Gave Up On:
Ray Donovan
Rectify
Top of the Lake
Under the Dome
Need to Get Back To:
Orphan Black
I don't think any of these shows are that special, but some are pretty good.
Hannibal had an awesome, different and really great formula, but just got trapped in it incredibly quickly (Similar to that old corn show Pushing Daisies; great pilot but nowhere to really go from there).
Bates isn't a great show, and probably isn't even a good show, but it's entertaining as fuck. Save for the kid, who is great, the whole cast is really fucking unwatchable though.
House of Cards is entertaining enough. If they excised the journalist (horribly acted) and her story line this show would be much, much better. They killed off the most compelling character IMO, but overall really good.
The Americans doesn't get any love, and it's a really well acted, really solid show. Probably equivalent to House of Cards IMO in that it's a totally solid but not exceptional show. This shit is LIGHT YEARS better than Homeland though, and practically doesn't get any love at all.
Voting The Americans because I think it's equivalent to House of Cards, but probably won't get as many votes.

Rectify was really fucking good too. Justified, GOT, Banshee, Eric Andre Show and Rectify all killed it this year

Love Orphan Black so much I'd consider voting for it for best show period (I wouldn't put it over Breaking Bad, but its top 3 with Game of Thrones for me).
About halfway through Top of the Lake, really great, also have been halfway through The Following for about 6 months, which says a lot about how good it is.
Bought House of Cards over Black Friday, looking forward to blazing through it. Will eventually catch up with The Americans and Banshee too.

I could have easily voted for The Americans, House of Cards, or Top of the Lake. All were really strong shows. Ultimately, I had the most fun watching Orphan Black.

Haven't seen the bulk of these, but The Americans is excellent. I've done three marathons already. Can't wait for Season 2.

Actually I think it boils down to, who the hell subscribes to Cinemax?ardamus wrote:Banshee is so slept on.
HBO and Showtime I can understand subscribing to, but Cinemax and The Movie Channel are like the bastard stepchildren of them. I'd guess that Starz and Epix have more subscribers than Cinemax.

Americans for sure. Need to watch orphan black tho

Re: Best New TV Drama
This is why in CYE (Tommy, you better be reading this), I bring up new shows. I watch most of this online subscriptions to cable are whatever. I just see shows that look cool or that get a fair amount of good reviews and check them out.Dan wrote:Actually I think it boils down to, who the hell subscribes to Cinemax?ardamus wrote:Banshee is so slept on.

Re: Best New TV Drama
thought aflaka woulda put another vote in for rectify. paused the americans after i'd say ep 4 or sometime around when mags martindale was introduced for it deemed on me that i'd rather watch it marathoning, still haven't gotten back to it

Banshee hands down and its not even close. Banshee could be the best show of the year.
Re: Best New TV Drama
I enjoyed rectify quite a bit. I am watching top of the lake now, but 4 episodes doesnt feel like a new show (i know its a series) but I need to see it hold up for a longer run. Americans and Orphan black both had a standard season run and were really good. I would say The Americans is potentially my 2nd favorite genre still on TV.LilLeftBrain wrote:thought aflaka woulda put another vote in for rectify. paused the americans after i'd say ep 4 or sometime around when mags martindale was introduced for it deemed on me that i'd rather watch it marathoning, still haven't gotten back to it

Re: Best New TV Drama
Saw a bit of Top of the Lake.
Terrible. Why does almost every tv-show have to have such strong feminist themes and sentiments? We Scandinavians have created monster and it only got worse once USA started copying every marginally succesful tv-show we make : (
I'm sure House of Cards (US) is crap but it turned me on to the original BBC-production which is excellent.

I've only seen the first half of Season 1, but it's decent. It turns out that Kevin Spacey is a closeted homosexual who was huffing cocks back in his college dayz. He's married to Sean Penn's ex-wife, and she looks like a man, so I guess it makes sense.
