Vice Principals (HBO, McBride, Goggings, Jody Hill)

Who mourns for Eastbound & Down? For those of you who do, HBO has some swell, Danny McBride-tastic news for you.

HBO has announced a new series from Eastbound & Down creators McBride and Jody Hill, called Vice Principals. McBride will return to star in the new comedy series, which has been given an 18-episode series order (with option for extension). In an interesting tactic, the decision on how many episodes per season will be decided later - so no, don't expect those 18 to air in one year, but rather broken up as McBride and HBO decide on the best approach.

According to HBO’s press release, McBride’s new comedy series will follow “the story of a high school and the people who almost run it, the vice principals.”

Eastbound & Down’s David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) and Stephanie Laing (Banshee) will executive produce Vice Principals.

Vice Principals doesn’t yet have a premiere date.

It's okay. Low budget as hell and you can tell it's their first feature film, but it has its moments.

the 'it's not as good as eb&d' backlash is inevitable simply because people will expect another eb&d while saying 'i hope it's not just a re-tread of eb&d' out of the other side of their mouth. it's like that thing where people don't want an artist to keep making the same album over and over but at the same time they kinda do and still shit on him when he tries something different. our expectation/hype cycle is a vicious bitch these days

but i'm sure the show itself will be good. Hill hasn't let down yet, DGG and McBride both did their best work of the last few years on eb&d... fairly confident that even if this one isn't as good, it'll still be good

it's obviously going to be good (these guys all have good track records) & like drizzle said, i hope it's a little different in tone than ED&B

i disagree about eastbound being DGG's best work tho. i actually prefer his "smaller" work (all the real girls, snow angels, prince avalanche). i actually just watched 'joe' yesterday. it was good & cage did a great job.. but you can't help but compare it to 'mud' which it's not as good as

^^ I was thinking specifically during the time eb&d was on, not his entire career. His older stuff is great, no question. He gets a lot of flack for the stuff that came after Pineapple Express, with Prince Avalanche supposedly being a mild return to form, but in that period he was also absolutely killing every eb&d episode he directed and nobody ever gives him credit for it.

it's no eastbound, but both eps have had some good chuckles. korean family situation is very promising. interested to see how the story develops overall.
