The Leftovers (HBO)

Post by Tommy Bunz »

Starts Sunday. Anyone checking for this? Early reviews have been pretty promising.
Lindelof being behind this makes me nervous after fucking us with Lost, but everyone else involved with this makes me think its worth giving a look.
I haven't read the book its based on but Perrotta wrote Election and Little Children.
And Peter Berg's involvement is really encouraging as he's a great director and he was behind Friday Night Lights, which is a top 10 show all time to me.
Plus its HBO and not network which is good.

I don't have many shows lined up for this summer either, seems like most the shit I watch just wrapped up. I'm in for the first few episodes at least

looks like it could be good, but it it's just a bunch of people moping without any mystery element as to what actually happened it might get a little dry

Reviews say it's super depressing. The mystery element isn't really an element. And Andy greenwald likes it. 3 strikes.
Might check it, rather see how you guys like it.

Greenwald's a fag. I just found out he's a phillies fan too, which makes me super ashamed of the even loose association.
But its been getting pretty much positive press everywhere, Sepinwall fucking loves it.

Definitely plan on watching this. The ads even made me like that James Blake song.

as long as the material and suspense/tension is well done, i'm hoping the gloomy vibe doesn't make it too painful to enjoy

Enjoyed the pilot, looking forward to seeing where they go with it from here. Daughter is hot as fuck, and her friend can get it too.

wonder if the characters in white get paid less since they dont have speaking roles
id be pissed
i'd storm into the studio execs officse and mime the fuck out of a new contract negotiation
it would be a like a game of angry pictionary with lots of dollar signs and bathroom stall vagina sketches being drawn

i know it was the pilot but it kinda seemed thrown together with a bunch of sub-plots. nothing that grabbed my attention but i'll give it a few more episodes.

I liked it. I could see it flying of the rails fairly easily but , at the same time, it could also be great if it holds together.

assuming that it stays consistent and within the same general vibe/approach, i thought it was really good, especially for a pilot. i thought it set the groundwork and introduced the characters without anything feeling rushed or forced. looking forward to the rest of the season.

I know you're just joking but yeah, they definitely get paid less.
There are set minimum wages and shit set by SAG, and if you get a speaking part you get a massive pay bump.

Just finished the novel. Unless the show deviates wildly from the book, you're all going to be extremely disappointed. Pissed off, even.

No spoilers but is this one of those shows where the question you want answered never gets answered? I suppose that's kinda asking for a spoiler...but still...put it in a spoiler thingy.

This isn't really much of a spoiler, but I'll put it in tags anyway since people are sensitive.
Based on the show's trailer, I was expecting a Lost-style story full of a deepening mystery surrounding the circumstances of the Departure and people in the town slowly unraveling and descending into anarchy. What I got was a story about a bunch of unlikable and selfish suburbanites learning to cope with the aftermath of their loved ones' disappearance. Letting go of the past, starting over, learning to love again, etc. It felt like something written for soccer moms. Lots of suburban depression and angst, little drama, and literally nothing in the way of mystery or suspense.
Granted, they could switch things up completely for the show, which they'd pretty much have to if they want it to be halfway decent.

too difficult for them to convey what happened and why so they make this a fun-filled drama with no fun, no good actors and nobody you give a fuck about.

Damn, so you guys are chomping at the bit to hate this one , huh? No good actors? It's full of them. Like I said, it seems it could go either way , quality wise, but the pilot was far from bad.

The woman who plays the cult leader is an awesome actress (see "Compliance") , Justin Theroux is dope. Amy Brenneman is good. And it's got tons of good supporting cast members. I mean, it's not True detective but to shit on it's cast should be the last of your concerns with the show.

The acting was fine, but the whole show feels kinda scattered. The pilot kinda dragged, didn't really need the extra ten minutes. We'll see.

tried it. took me 2 attempts to get through it and was ambivalent about it. will wait til the season's done and see what response is like and decide whether or not to binge watch.
