Dan's DVD Picks for July 15th

Post by Dan »

Well, this is where you'd expect to read my DVD picks, but Amazon has made it virtually impossible to hotlink to their images. Over the past few months you couldn't just right click the image to the get the URL, you had to quickly load the page and immediately right click. Sometimes it would take me 3 tries to get one image. I dealt with it, it was almost like a game that I was getting better at each and every week. Now, Amazon has done something where you no longer even get the URL to the image. Instead, you get an extremely long string of random characters.

Here's what you get when right clicking on the Orphan Black Season Two Blu-ray, which comes out on Tuesday:

Image

Look at that scroll bar on the right side of the image, that string goes on and on and on and it doesn't end with a .jpg.

Sure, I could download every image and upload them elsewhere, but that's just too time consuming, especially in a thread that I have noticed has dipped in interest more and more as the weeks go by. You could blame it on weak release weeks, less snarky comments on shitty releases on my part (Andvil was great at this), and/or the fact that very few people are interested in physical media. In 2014 it makes much more sense to have a "What's New in Streaming This Week" thread rather than anything DVD/Blu-ray related.

It's been fun (sometimes) doing these threads every week. Like everything, however, all good things must come to an end.

I'm down for a what's streaming thread. Netflix has a way of hiding sweet new titles I would like to watch.

Whats the story with netflix on xbox? I seem to remember being able to scroll through everything they had on there when Id use it at my mates via his laptop but theyve seriously limited it way down to certain categories and selections with xbox, or maybe it was always like this to an extent i unno. xbone is pretty terrible across the board either way

Why not just list the releases? We don't necessarily need images. Or how about just getting the images from imdb?

I'm definitely still interested in knowing what's coming out, this is one of the few that I check for regularly in Curb.

I feel your pain, Dan. When I was making my lists I swear Amazon updated every other week so I'd have to completely change how I got the image of the DVD cover. Huge pain in the ass

The images break up the monotony of a lot of words that people will end up skipping over. They're a very important aspect of the whole presentation. A text list of upcoming releases would be boring. Might as well check out the links mentioned in this thread on your own on a weekly basis. My sources besides Amazon, were:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/releasedates.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.filmaf.com/releases.html?pub ... us*med_0_B" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It was a long streak that Andvil and I had. I basically picked it up as people were moving away from stocking their shelves with discs and were more interested in streaming or filling their hard drives.

Major thanks to Andvil and Dan for keeping this going as long as it could.
Invaluable resource for us serious movie collectors, also always a great reminder as to when there would be new good 1080p downloads for new shit

It may be a pain in the ass but with google chrome if you right click view page source they give you the .jpg image about a quarter of the weigh down. If this is the image you want. Or is it a different one?
