Boyhood (Richard Linklater, 2014)

Post by Career Over Like Mike(NJJ) »

Am I alone in being disappointed by this after Linklater's killer run of Me & Orson Welles, Bernie, and Before Midnight, and the across the board ecstatic reviews it's gotten?

Loved how Linklater had approached such a mammoth task of making a movie in typically unassuming manner for the first 100 minutes and change, but that last 50 minutes or so felt like such a slog to sit through. Maybe the warning signs were there all along after it began with a Coldplay song?

Really feel like the movie should have focused more on Samantha (Linklater's IRL daughter) who was a much more interesting character than Masor Jr who became such a Faggot Ass Carl during his teenage years, and there's one jarringly cringeworthy moment which I won't spoil for anyone who hasn't seen it yet that I wouldn't let slide from a rookie director let alone a director with 16 movies in the can.

I dunno, I really loved it, easily as good as advertised

Mason turned out to be a bit more of a droopy-eyed philosophical dork than I'd hoped, but hell, 75% of white kids seem to turn out that way
I think Linklater completely nailed it

It's not going to be screening here in Cleveland until Aug 1, but I'm looking forward to it. I first heard about this movie on a podcast, like six years-old.

Can't wait to see it.

great concept, 1st half of the movie was coo. 2nd half i was lol'ing at every attempted heartfelt moment. by the end of the movie, felt like i'd wasted money because it became so fucking corny by the end.

A stunning film, really; visually it has all the cues of classic Linklater. However, the storytelling far and away sets this apart from a lot of films this year.

The easter egg at the end made it feel worth the 3 hours I sat through. Admittedly not well versed on a lot of Linklater so I have nothing to compare this to. Not that I think this movie can really find comparison in its process and its ambition, but I was very intrigued by the filmmaking aspect above anything else. Mostly great. 7 out of 10.
