BETTER CALL SAUL REVIEW: THE LAST HURRAH OF DIFFICULT MEN
The Saul Goodman series starts out already better than Breaking Bad.
I'll just say it: The first few episodes that I saw are better than Breaking Bad. They are smarter. They are sharper. I have never seen a prequel handled so cleverly. What we know from the previous series about Saul Goodman, or James McGill as he is known in Better Call Saul, provides a kind of counterintuitive suspense mechanism.
In the very first shot, in silent black and white, we see the ruins of Saul Goodman after the action of Breaking Bad, just as he said he would be. He's working at a Cinnabon in a mall, terrified of anyone slightly threatening who walks into the store.
The question for the plot is: How did he become this way? How did he fail so catastrophically?

We've never talked about it outside of the Breaking Bad thread, so its about time it got its own thread.
I'm really excited for this but I'm trying to avoid reading anything about it and spoiling it.

It is really weird, to have the second ep air the night after the premiere. Why not just do two on the same night?

My only guess is that they want the WD lead in for the pilot to make people aware of it, then moving it to Monday permanently. Pilot presumably will have a cliffhanger type ending that people will tune in for on Monday.

I'm pretty cyced for this. BB is my favorite show of all time, and it will be great to see Gilligan and co's vision of the Southwest back on my TV every week.

Reviews are stellar so far as well, from what I've seen.

I'm excited for it too.

Anyone read Odenkirk's book that he released last year?

In like with the first episode. The opener was a cool tie in to BB. Funny mustache but why would he have to work, wasn't he compensated by WW?

Looks like episode 2 is where the meat is at tho, no homo.

great start; I felt they went a little overboard by showing so many BB charterers so early...

Yeah it was a little much but I kind of figured that's the way the first episode or two would be to try to suck in as much of the breaking bad audience as they could. Right now the novelty of the guest appearances could keep some people around or make them give it a shot for a few weeks. Eventually the show will have to stand on it's own two feet and I did see a bit of promise in the first episode. I liked their choice for the Cold Open too.

a much more docile, and less-tweakish version of Tuco.

Glad I kept my expectations at reasonable levels, cause this was decent at best.
I think it assumes way too much of a familiarity with the character, if you didn't watch Breaking Bad there would be literally nothing to motivate you to watch a second episode.
I'm in for the season regardless, hoping that they just had to spend the first episode setting shit up and that it will get more interesting soon.

yeah, why studios even make sequels and spinoffs of incredibly successful projects is baffling.
