Crimson Peak (new Guillermo del Toro film)

Post by Spartan »

A new Guillermo del Toro flick is always a good thing and this is supposedly a gothic horror with a pretty good cast. Liking the look of this, even if does feels like he cooked this shit right up after watching The Woman in Black.
Legendary Pictures’ Crimson Peak, a co-production with Universal Pictures, is a haunting gothic horror story directed by the master of dark fairy tales, Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy series, Pacific Rim), written by del Toro & Matthew Robbins and starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam and Jim Beaver.

In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers.

Based on The Orphanage I expect this to be ridiculously creepy. Looks good.

Is it just me or does Mia Wasikowska look like a more feminine Tilda Swinton?

kinda still into it aside from what sounds like awkward romantic moments

Twitch has a much kinder take, pre-empting Variety's criticisms right off the bat

I can kinda see both being right actually, even if the Variety dude went in expecting a more straightforward haunted house thing that still doesn't mean Del Toro's Henry James moves work all the way either

Guillermo's straight up said its more of a gothic romance and not a true horror story from the start.
I'm still all in, seeing the trailer in IMAX before The Walk on Sunday was :ohsh:

I'm looking at the trailers before other movies in the theatre..... I'm like.......meehhhhhhhhhhhh disappointing
it seems like Guillermo is letting his imagination overpower the need for a real good story. movies tell stories they explain shit they have an opinion. that's something Scorsese etc never lost sight of. Guillermo is like my opinion is that this shit is cool let's make it look cool and jam some story into it

pans labyrinth was so great not just because the interplay between the story in real life and the story of the fairy world but because shit was liberally sprinkled in to enhance the story. not be the focus of the movie
I just gotta have more than feel for my movies. I mean like marie Antoinette was like the perfect feel movie that told a story and triangulated that shit just perfect. pans labyrinth same thing. pacific rim? nah. this shit? probably nah

This was fucking amazing. Go see it in IMAX while you still can.
Del Toro's outdone himself, every single frame of this thing is some of the most beautiful, haunting gothic imagery ever put on film.
There's not another director alive that could have made this film.
