I thought Maniac was pretty great, beautifully shot and fantastic actors and characters. The plot itself was a bit flimsy, but it was so well executed. Especially liked the Loc Jonah Hill episode, had me dying (unintentional or not). Thought the set design (smartly) took a lot of cues from Legion.

Hold The Dark

Can't say that it was bad; can't say that it was good. Interesting, bizarre, at least I felt that way, film that could have been a lot tighter in the end.

Apostle is great but not GOAT. Felt like a miniseries crammed in to a feature with a few too many standard cult plotpoints and some hammy dialogue. That being said it's beautiful and very atmospheric - maybe it's just me who would have preferred a lean 100 min revenge film. The name Gareth Evans comes with unreasonable expectations too.

Apostle was really good. I enjoyed the packed in second half.

As a fan of both the book and the original movie, The Haunting of Hill House is fucking great. 6 episodes in.

depends, 2 hour plus flick watched in three parts. lol not the worst viewing experience. there are too many live events on that I often have to pause and go to something else

anyway starting part 3 now (last 30 mins)

I don't normally review them in twenty minute sequences...

Movie in the end was okay, absolute ending saved it I suppose.

It's unnecessarily convoluted and runs way too long, but I liked Apostle quite a lot. It check marks a bunch of elements too numerous to list that appeal to me immensely. Had the film been a bit leaner and tighter in the editing suite, this would have probably wound up my fave of the year.

Also checked out Netflix's 22 July which was way better than I initially expected it to be.

Landed about in the same place as the rest of your guys on Apostle. A little too long and slow in the first half, although there isn't much in there that felt like overtly dead weight. Loved most of the second half, even though it could've used a little more streamlining and I would've liked to see a little more violent confrontation.
having Thomas at least attempt to brawl with the spear guards seemed like a pretty obvious scene here, surprised Evans didn't go for it
BUT with that said, considering how much of this movie works, even in ways that aren't specifically pinned to genre, it feels backwards to come at this with expectations based on The Raid. It's the opposite, what Evans does here proves he has more to offer than just movies about awesome brawls. Dude is shaping up to be a good director who knows how to create a world, give it the right look and texture, build and hold tension, get good performances out of actors that aren't just fighting, etc...

yeah plot didn't have any crazy twists/mindblowing moments like similar shows westworld, black mirror. what it does better than westworld though is actually wrap up the story and make use of its actors. jonah hill + emma stone interacting >>>>>>>>> ed harris/ tony hopkins solo masturbation vids. also much better aesthetics. the lab looked to me like bladerunner (haven't seen legion) and all the dream sequences were unique settings.

i also appreciated the humour. beyond the dream setting the fucking dude with his mechanical dick sucker... good lord.

This turned out even more violent and gory than the director's previous effort, Headshot and that's saying something.

Daredevil season 3 was good. Like all the Marvel stuff it wasn’t perfect but this was on par with season 1 for quality.

yea this was better than Headshot, best fight-oriented action I've seen since Raid 2. Might be some of the best action choreography done this century. I gasped repeatedly at both the savagery of the gore and the kind of stunts and effects they were able to pull off to facilitate it

Great article on the Ringer today by Tom Breihan about Apostle and The Night Comes For Us and the strange promo they have/haven't received-

https://www.theringer.com/movies/2018/1 ... s-berendal" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It was this info at the end though that really caught my eye-
Right now, (Gareth) Evans is working on Gangs of London, a contemporary crime series that’s set to air on Cinemax next year. And as for Iko Uwais, he’s getting his own show, too. He’ll star in Wu Assassins, a martial arts show set in the San Francisco underworld, and he’ll also produce and choreograph the fights. Look for it sometime soon on Netflix.
