Is stranger things some sci fi shit or is it more than that? I've heard good things but only from people who loved X-files. Don't wanna waste my time if it's on that wave.

what constitutes normal scifi and what constitutes something more?

it's normal sci-fi set in the early 80's. It's a throwback to Speilberg, Donner etc... Broadchurch with Aliens.

Hmm...good question. Hard to say. I generally don't give a fuck about most sci fi. Ranging from star wars to X files to star trek. But I fuck with some futuristic dystopian type vibes (blade runner, Total recall, 5th element...)
But I generally am bored by by things that take place well outside of the realm of reality. Does that make sense? i dunno. i might as well just watch the first episode and see for myself. I'm just being lazy.

Yes stop being lazy. Your question is impossible to answer

I just watched the first ep. Seems kinda dope. I'm in. Basically, i just didn't wanna get involved with some space nerd shit.

5th element is WAY more space nerdy than X-files, though.

Yeah, Stranger Things was definitely a worthy show to binge watch. Initially wrote it off as Super 8: The Series, turned out so much better than I expected.

SMH I'm like the only person who really likes Super 8 (yes I know the last act is butt and the alien is kinda lame)
Watched one ep of Stranger Things and enjoyed it a lot and will def watch the rest BUT they are taking the 80s thing to an uncanny valley level and I feel like we're reaching critical mass with 80s pastiches in general.
When I realized the font they use for the title is the same font as on the cover of the shitty 80s scifi paperback I'm reading now I was impressed with the level of detail. When the intro title card emulated VHS grain, I rolled my eyes a little remembering all those faux-grindhouse movies from the 00s. When the score kicked in and I immediately thought of Beyond The Black Rainbow and The Guest, more so than anything actually from the 80s, I started to wonder if maybe this trend has peaked.
Still the cast was dope and what they showed of the creature thing/mystery so far was intriguing so I'm in.

Stick with it. The novelty of the whole retro cool hipster shit takes a backseat in further episodes and the plot shifts into next gear.

I'm a big fan of Super 8 as well. The third act and monster design couldn't live up to the rest of the film but overall its pretty great and has held up well on re-watches.
The train crash is awesome and possibly the loudest thing ever filmed, first time I watched it I jumped out of my seat thinking my speakers were going to blow.

Watched the first few episodes of Frontier and it's pretty dope. Almost feels like a companion piece to Taboo about trading companies (Taboo from the British side and Frontier from the American side). I don't like it as much as Taboo, but I enjoy the subject matter and the stylized violence is pretty sweet. Cool seeing the Indian from Fargo season 2 in there as well.

yep, we feel about the same. It's funny because it is what it is like you said, and I enjoy it for that, but at the same time I LOVE the seriousness and self importance of Taboo even though it seems so off putting to critics.
I expected to not like the 2nd episode of Taboo as much as the 1st because of the critics, but I loved it. I don't feel they've gotten nearly enough credit for the world they've constructed for Hardy, Pryce and their amazing cast to run wild in.

Netflix is now getting into the preservation/restoration of classics game, which is pretty fucking exciting.
They're bankrolling the release of the infamous, never-seen Orson Welles film The Other Side of the Wind, which he died before he was able to finish.
I feel like the Netflix movies are just gonna be the next wave for them in general. More promising stuff happening there than in their original series.
