"Black Mass" (Depp = Whitey Bulger)

Profoundly underwhelming; Depp is good as Bulger, but the rest of the ensemble is basically different types of diarrhea. Todd from BB as Weeks is severely underutilized; English dude who plays Billy Bulger gets the same treatment.

Thought it was decent. I'm a Boston native, very well informed on the bulger bros and have met billy a few times. Depp was very good. Ben cum didn't capture billy at all. The guy playing the FBI agent John Connolly was excellent. I'll give the movie a solid B.

Billy bulger was extremely charismatic and impish; best way to describe him would be the southie Johnny carson. Extremely smart, extremely skilled politically, the most powerful politicians in the state for 20 yrs. My pops knew him very well on a professional level; he said that everything that he said had layers of meaning...cumbatch sort of got that part right.

halfway thru it and don't find it nearly as bad as some of you have made it out to be.

Dude, it's awful; they barely even touch on Connely's corruption and what exactly he did. It's all vague shit.

I have to echo most people's criticism here. There's no heart to this movie because you never really get to know anyone well enough to give a shit.

Depp is great as Bulger and I thought Edgerton was a very compelling character, but they really do only seem to skim the surface of both men's lives. Bulger just seems to move aimlessly from crime to crime without really going into any intricacies of how he came to power beyond getting the mafia busted. Connolly's scenes entail him saying that Bulger isn't committing crimes. Over and over and over again. Peter Sarsgaard was horrendous in this, btw; just overacting all over the place. Go away Adam Scott, this kind of movie isn't for you.

That said, with the talent involved this should have been a much better movie, but it's a second tier crime flick you can watch on a plane. I actually just watched "Blood Ties", and I would recommend that way before I'd recommend this if you're in the mood for this kind of movie.
