Hail, Caesar! (Coen Bros)

Rooting for this to be good but also kinda wondering if this is gonna be the place where their current streak runs out of steam. It looks a little overwrought...

I think it looks great, glad to see them doing another comedy after three straight serious films and 50's Hollywood is right up their alley.

Has a very high chance of being great. The setting is perfect for their style of writing, sure to be some fantastic dialogue. Plus movies about Hollywood always seem to be pretty entertaining.

Didn't think that much of this.

It's kind of a mess, and ends up being an homage to old Hollywood without doing much more. Brolin was fantastic, but his character is fairly static the entire film short of his struggle with his job and smoking. It just comes off as a day-in-the-life which is interesting, but the stakes never feel all that high. Some really stunning numbers with Tatum and Johannsen, but they felt really out of place and dragged on and on. The Clooney storyline should have had more done to it. It all just felt like a loose collection of ideas that they used Brolin to help tie together.

Alden Ehrenreich was the best part of this movie, he more than held his own alongside the A list of Hollywood. Incredible screen presence, and he played the aww shucks character to perfection. Didn't make sense that Brolin would tell him about the kidnapping, but whatever. Frances McDormand killed it in her one scene as well.

This will forever go down as lesser Coen work, but even in their lesser films they always do interesting things and have brilliant moments. Never a waste of time.

6 outta 10

More or less agree with what you said. It's fast paced and witty, but too insular and inside jokish to be a great movie. You can tell the Coen's are fascinated by that particular era Hollywood, but that time and place is not nearly as interesting to me as say the setting for Llewyn Davis. Brolin owns the movie though and although he doesn't play a super wide range of characters in his roles, I love how he throws himself into his characters and adds nuance to every part he plays. The interactions between Brolin and Tilda Swinton might have been my favorite part of the movie.

Way better than Inside Llewyn Davis, imo.

Been ages since Coens actually delivered a satisfying ending.
