Star Trek: Beyond (Dir. Justin Lin)

Post by drizzle »

Looking forward to this, I feel like Lin could do well with it. Kinda hope that this thing is just contained to one remote planet, would be a nice change of pace from the continuous world building of the last 2

It doesn't seem much like star trek in a sense. If the new show is more cerebral, then I'm happy with the movies being action based.

Fucking JJ. He is on top of the world right now.

He is, but he was more of a name/financial backing/support? on this one I would imagine. He was doing Star Wars so he had no real involvement on this movie from what I heard (on Stern).

He just has producer credit on this. Pegg wrote it. Judging from the way they're showing the action, this looks like Lin in full on FF5-6 mode

I thought Pegg was a legit star trek fan. I'm surprised he wrote this. Im sure the studio placed certain demands on the screenplay, though.

Not mad at that trailer at all.

Trekkies were nerd raging with Vulcan in the first one, imagine their reaction if we get the Enterprise dragging that big ass Borg cube around the galaxy wrecking shit up.

Justin Lin is not talented and sucks balls.

He ruined Fast & Furious (an once-impervious franchise) and he's also responsible for this atrocity.

Ruined as in brought back from near obsolescence to improbably being one of the most popular and profitable franchises of all time? What an asshole.

Have the Beastie Boys ever licensed their music for a film before? I thought they had a strict no-advertising use of their music policy. I guess movie trailers don't count?
MCA rolling in his grave and shit.

Lin apparently didn't want that song or the motorcycle in the trailer because he didn't want to alienate the old core ST fans

apparently this one totally ignores that little detail about how the 2nd one introduces immortality/a way to bring anybody back from the dead into the continuity, probably for the best

Staring to genuinely feel bad for Lin and Pegg, they're getting railed since the trailer and at this point are just pleading with people to give them a chance at all

Nothing mindblowing but I enjoyed it enough.

There's some awkward clashing between Pegg's script, which needs room for it's ticks and quips to breathe, and Lin's direction which is still in frantic Fast&Furious mode, but when the two sides gel this is a fun lowstakes outing. It felt more like a TV show episode on a big budget than an event movie, but I'm not mad at that. I think this actually made it feel more Trek-y in a way, especially after Into Darkness played like a generic summer action blockbuster.

yeah. The whole episodic vs. cinematic argument seems to never end. movies that feel like tv/streaming shows and tv/streaming shows that play out like movies. the action blockbusters suffer this reverse role the most, esp the marvel movies.

you're thinking of something different

Marvel's movies purposefully build a continuous narrative where one movie feeds the next. That's not what happened here.

This felt episodic more in the sense of an anthology series. An almost standalone, self-contained adventure for the crew, placed in the context of a continuing series of such adventures - just like the Trek tv shows.

Ah, ok. Totally understood .

Couldn't help but feel a bit pained watching Yelchin in his scenes. Hard to think how they can go forward without Chekhov, or another one. He was so, so good.

did not like how buddy movieish this felt. like it's an earlier star trek movie. very suck on that front. disappointing overall but not bad per se but I'm not recommending it to anyone.

opening sequence with the swarm was dope. final sequence at the base was dope.
