Greatest Westerns since 2000

Haven't done one of these threads in a while. There have been some really strong Westerns in the last 15 years, especially considering that the genre supposedly died out in the 90s. Name/list/grade your favorites.

For the sake of ease/sanity let's keep to a tradition definition of a Western that implies a pre-20th century setting with horses and cowboys and shit like that. Period-adjacent frontier stuff like Revenant is close enough, but modern day thematic 'westerns' like History Of Violence or No Country are not.

I'd say this for my top 5:

1. The Proposition
2. Deadwood
3. True Grit
4. Django
5. 3:10 To Yuma

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford would certainly be in my top 5.
Appaloosa is really good as well.

Wikipedia is a bad source for most things. And they don't "take place in the western time frame" which is the middle to the end of the 19th century, in America.
There Will Be Blood takes place about a hundred years ago, way after the west was settled. If that's a western then so is every movie ever set in the west coast.
The Last Samurai is a samurai film. It has the time frame right but its about a civil war soldier who goes to Japan and learns the way of the samurai. Its setting and themes have nothing to do with western themes at all.
Not to mention in the very first post drizzle said to stick to traditional westerns.

There are tons of westerns, including some that pretty much define the genre, that are set during the civil war or make some reference to it or use it/its fallout as a plot device.

But for all that, the line between war movies and westerns is usually pretty distinct. Obviously something like Glory wouldn't count, that's a war movie. I feel like there are some that hang in between the two, can't think of any at the moment tho... there probably aren't too many.

Sure. Depends on the setting.
The Good the Bad & The Ugly is a civil war movie and clearly one of the best westerns ever made. But it only takes place in the west before it was settled. Same with Dances with Wolves and Ride With The Devil (which is an amazing modern western that just misses the cutoff date since it was released in 1999).
Most of the Civil War movies that take place in the east probably don't, unless they're specifically about clashes between the civilized and the "savages", like any of the Last of the Mohicans adaptations.

Just now seeing that you posted the same time as I did, your response is better, most are either westerns with civil war elements or vice versa, very few are equally both at the same time.
Ride With The Devil probably straddles the line better than any I can think of, as its about the civil war battles between militias in the far western outreaches of the united states, and the militias are all made up of farmers and cowboys from the local areas and not trained soldiers so the western elements equally balance out the war elements.

Two other good civil war westerns: The Outlaw Josey Wales and Django the Bastard.
