HBO Is Airing A Seven-Hour Cut Of ‘The Godfather'

In 1977, NBC found some time in its busy schedule of Chico and the Man reruns to air The Godfather Saga, a massive seven-and-a-half-hour chronological edit of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. It follows Marlon Brando’s Vito Corleone from his young immigrant days, where he’s played by Robert De Niro, to when he’s a crazy old man with oranges in his mouth.

The Godfather Saga had director Francis Ford Coppola’s blessing (he reportedly said yes because he needed money to finish making Apocalypse Now). But with the Saga‘s toned-down violence and frequent commercial breaks, not to mention how it aired over four nights, it’s not the way The Godfather and The Godfather Part II deserve to be seen. Enter HBO, which is airing the re-named Godfather Epic throughout January, complete with restored violence and footage that was cut from the theatrical releases.

interesting idea. but the ogs are sweet enough. don't need to be touched.

the famed star wars machete order; I get that. that makes sense. I've never seen it like that because I don't own the movies but yeah sounds good.

re editing to see all of vitos life in one go? why? the tale is already everything it could be

which reminds me... I'm set to watch once upon a time in America today...

I've seen this and it's great. In the early 80s, they released The Godfather Saga uncut on VHS and, while of course the originals are classics, the additional footage really adds to it, and seeing it in chronological order shows some masterful elements of the story that will make you appreciate the whole entity more.

Definitely worth watching, might have to upgrade the DVD burns I made of this.

Very dope. I had to break it up in two parts ironically but I really enjoyed it with this format.

I feel like i've seen this uncut on tv before.

It's fine but I prefer the originals. There's more to these movies than just the story itself, flattening out the structure looses some of that.

Have no interest in this at all.
Pretty much only exists because Coppola was whoring out everything he possibly could in order to not lose his vineyards to bankruptcy.

"The first two Godfather films were re-edited together in chronological order with additional footage added."
