on the one hand LOL and i didn't even bother with the Renner one, on the other hand... 10000% with it, including the Rambo 3-ish super soldier pit-fighting in the third world shit and all that

my favorite thing about the Bourne movies by far is that they're all about him trying to remember the same thing over and over...

1 - i don't remember who i am
2 - i remember some stuff now but not everything
3 - i remember a little more but still not everything

4 - ???

5 - I REMEMBER EVERYTHING....umm guess not?

The Renner one was trash. Good enough for one watch and then barely.

He just doesn't have it. Matt does. Yeshomo.

While I have not completely lost my penchant for bad movies, its really just Renner that I don't like. He's just not a good main character to me.

He made a joke at one point saying the next film would be titled "The Bourne Redundancy." Perhaps they finally took it to heart.

Finally saw this, the character still has legs but this was like a C+, B- at best.

Damon is aging into the role appropriately. In 2002 he looked fresh and ready to fuck shit up, now he's all lumpy and tired and fittingly 'god are we really doing this shit AGAIN' scowled. And there are good things that could be done with this aging weariness, but the producers/writers have only a very faint idea of what those might be.

The plot is the same old 'Bourne has yet ANOTHER blank in his memory and he must scramble against yet another grizzled old white dude to find out'. The action is solid enough, even managing a few real WOW moments, but every good idea they have was already done better in the first 3. Cassel is a good villain but not as good as Clive Owen or Karl Urban, the climatic car chase is good but not as good as the climax of the 2nd movie, etc etc... Also, while the previous movies made bank on being dumb action movies pretending to be intelligent thrillers, here the pretense falls hugely flat and a lot of the movie feels aggressively, almost insultingly stupid.

The most annoying shit is how the new ideas that could refresh the franchise are either swept up as bplots or used only in the denouement to set up the next sequel. The german hacker and the young social media prodigy should've both had bigger roles. The young racially ambiguous CIA chick playing Bourne against her superiors should've been the focal point of the 3rd act, instead we get a vague suggestion that this will be the subject of the next movie.

@drizzle
I agree with a lot of that. I think it's lost its edge and is becoming a bit too run of the mill franchise (albeit with that guerilla style). but the action and fights are fucking sick. the chases are still sick and I don't give a fuck about chases in any other franchise. and the espionage one man tactics shit is still fucking sweet. the layering of the story and how they intertwine shit is still good too but I agree at some point dealing with the past is getting old but they're obv gonna do another one so let's just cross our fingers and hope for the best.

the ceo story had some intrigue until it got out of hand but the initial potential was there. and the thing all of the sudden becoming mostly about big brotherly surveillance is ridiculous. in the first three that was underneath all the good shit coloring the story etc and it gave it some unity with the rest of the world and put you in that shadow govt espionage context. but Jason bourne as freedom fighter for individual liberty? sfucking retarded.

still a sweet experience though. I think the production crew makes a great movie that stays compelling by using the visual and the hidden and the known and the unknown sometimes working together and sometimes at odds and really using what is nebulous and opaque to drive things. the need for clarity and yet the tactical use of diversion misinformation etc. really cool shit.
