Midnight Special (Dir Jeff Nichols, Michael Shannon)
Really curious to see what Nichols can do with this idea, both in the context of his work and as a counter point to current superhero movie trends

Nichols/Shannon developing into one of the best director/muse combos
Trailer is reminding me of something I can't put my finger on

yeuh, it doesnt give enough of the story away for me to even guess what its about in its core, but intriguing enough to really draw my attention.

Vishnetsky is all in balls deep, like down to the pubes and maybe a part of a foot in there too

Anybody watch this? First act was HOT FIRE followed by an ok sci-fi flick/Spielberg-lite vibe.
Light flare's been done to death. I was intrigued by it but felt it could have been so much more.

Probably the best movie I've seen this past year (beats out Sicario). I didn't think anything would touch Hans Zimmer's score for BvS but Midnight Special did. Great acting all around, Nichols seems to be big into the Biblical/Christ allegory's.

Thought this was pretty average.
Definitely a Close Encounters of the Third Kind/Starman vibe that doesn't pay off, as no new ground is broken within. I did like that it just drops you in the middle of the story and you have to figure it out as you go, but I really didn't like the world on world ending that isn't explained at all. Everyone in this does good work, but it doesn't have much of a heart so it's difficult to really care too much about any of these characters. Shannon just mopes about for the entire film, but he does have a good chemistry with the boy. It all just ends up feeling very derivative, but it's fine for a renter.
6 outta 10
