Here’s what’s premiering for the month of May.


Houdini & Doyle (FOX)

Inspired by true events, Houdini & Doyle draws heavily on the rich history of the period. Two great men of the 20th Century – Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – grudgingly join forces with New Scotland Yard to investigate unsolved and inexplicable crimes with a supernatural slant. (Premieres May 2nd)


Marseille (Netflix)

Robert Taro has been the mayor of Marseille for 25 years. Now he faces a merciless election against his young, ambitious former protégé. (Premieres May 5th)


Flowers (Seeso)

Flowers is an imaginative, cinematic show about an eccentric and dysfunctional family struggling to hold themselves together. Maurice (Julian Barratt), the author of illustrated children’s books The Grubbs, and music teacher wife Deborah (Olivia Colman) are barely together, but yet to divorce. As Maurice fights inner demons and dark secrets, Deborah tries to keep the family together at all costs and becomes increasingly suspicious that Maurice is in a secret homosexual relationship with his Japanese illustrator Shun (Will Sharpe). (Premieres May 5th)


Upstart Crow (BBC Two)

A six-part sitcom about the life of William Shakespeare from Ben Elton starring David Mitchell. It’s 1592 and Will Shakespeare is just at the beginning of his extraordinary career. The series will focus on both Will’s family and professional life and include the surprising stories of where many of his ideas came from. Also featured are his wife Anne and his extended family, his servant Bottom, his friends Kate and Marlowe, his theatrical troupe, and his rival Robert Greene. (Premieres May 9th)


First Impressions (USA)

First Impressions, a half-hour competition featuring Emmy Award-Winner & SNL Alum Dana Carvey and host Freddie Prinze Jr., pits America’s best amateur impressionists against each other in a battle of celebrity impression. (Premieres May 10th)


Coupled (FOX)

Hosted by entertainment personality Terrence “J” Jenkins, Coupled follows 12 single, smart and young professional women looking for love, who will meet face-to-face with eligible single men against the beautiful backdrop of the Caribbean islands. The women have first choice as they instantly decide if they feel a spark of chemistry and want to spend more time with each guy, or if they don’t feel a connection and want to wait for the next one. The real soap opera unfolds as new couples are formed and have to discover whether or not they have the compatibility to make their relationships last. Coupled will also feature the one thing that all modern romances have in common – texting. The women and men are armed with cell phones throughout the series, giving the audience a front row seat to the real drama, as their text conversations pop up on screen. (Premieres May 17th)


Lady Dynamite (Netflix)

Comedian Maria Bamford stars in a series inspired by her own life. It’s the sometimes surreal story of a woman who loses –- and then finds –- her shit. (Premieres May 20th)


Preacher (AMC)

Preacher is the story of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), a conflicted preacher in a small Texas town who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that allows him to develop a highly unconventional power. Jesse embarks on a journey to, literally, find God, joined by his ex-girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) and an Irish vagabond named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun). (Premieres May 22nd)


Rovers (Sky1)

Rovers is an original take on the goings on in the clubhouse of a lower league football.
Established in 1884, Redbridge Rovers FC are one of oldest clubs in the English club system. Attendance figures average around 27. The team are currently lying second from bottom in their league and their ground is two miles down a dirt track, next to the local rubbish tip.
Running the place is matriarchal, hardworking and loose lipped Doreen. Her meat raffles are legendary and have kept punters coming through her doors all those years.
Other characters include obsessive fan Pete Mott, who likes nothing more than talking stats over the scratchings with his best mate Tel - only Tel has recently thrown Pete for a loop by coming out as gay and bringing his new boyfriend Mel to the club.
Then there's Pete's young lodger Tom, who has got eyes for new barmaid Sam, bossy pensioner Francis and a whole host of other loveable eccentrics. (Premieres May 24th)


Maya and Marty in Manhattan (NBC)

The series will feature sketches that spoof current events, celebrities and topical trends, as well as musical performances. Among comedy circles, Maya Rudolph and Martin Short are considered two of the best sketch performers in the business and this collaboration will create a comedy one-two punch unlike any other on television. (Premieres May 31st)

i might privately watch couples as summer guilty pleasure

Marseille interests me based on the subject matter, not sure yet about Preacher.

The only show I'll definitely watch will be Marseille since Netflix has a good track record.
Rovers is probably gonna be a lot like "The Job Lot" which may be another funny ass UK show.
Preacher and Feed The beast have good bases for a story too. I may give htose pilots at the very least a go.
