Anybody else watching this? It's a quality sci-fi series that does a great job of paying tribute to so much of what made 80's so fun. Really enjoying the fuck out of this.

Agreed, it's a great show.

Some discussion on it over in the Netflix thread, but it's a fucking mess. It deserves its own thread, tbh.

Watched the whole thing this weekend and loved it, really hope they do another season. Shit, I'd settle for following these same characters in this setting even without the supernatural element, it's just so well made that it's like a perfect time capsule of the 80s.

Best show I've watched this year. The Duffer Brothers basically Tarentino'ed the 80's, they wear their influences on their sleeve but mashed them all together to create something that stands on its own entirely.
One of the most likeable casts of kids I can think of as well. They set themselves up nicely for a second season, I just hope they can match the same level of intensity and quality.

Didn't like the last scene, but that was a great series. Really well-executed.

pure 80s porn, but a solid enough story to carry it off.

I've seen a little bit of backlash, probably because it became so popular so quickly and haters gonna hate, but I loved it. Watched it twice.

Finally finished it... doesn't have an original bone in its entire body but the execution of these old tropes is so solid and the result is so amiable you would have to make a purposeful effort to resist it.

Throwing a 'do you read Steven King' in the middle of explaining Eleven's Firestarter rip-off backstory was a little much tho, kinda like Mr Robot with the Pixies cover drop

I haven't enjoyed a show this much in a long time. Nostalgia got the the best of me.

Stranger Things is one of the most popular Netflix original series of all time, with 8.2 million people watching it in its first 16 days. The only shows that did better than Stranger Things are Fuller House and the latest season of Orange Is the New Black. Surprisingly, this vintage sci-fi thriller did better than Marvel properties Daredevil and Jessica Jones, as well as critical darlings House of Cards and Narcos.

I don't buy it. She encounters the monster with her powers (it seems to be attracted to her because it senses her or something) and creates the worm hole from the shock of encountering it. This happens on the same black plain where she sees the russian guy who she's spying on telepathically, there is nothing to imply that this black plain is in her subconscious. But there is evidence that the Upside down is in fact NOT her subconscious and is a real place, like the fact that people actually went there.

The Phoenix/Dark Phoenix are not Jean Grey's alter ego and they are not created by her, they are a separate creature attracted to Jean Grey's power. So in a way yes, that was a nod describing 11's situation. It's just not the situation this theory assumes.

I def buy it. For as awesome as this show was, it was also pretty poorly put together story-wise, so it wouldn't surprise me if this poorly thought out surprise twist comes to fruition.

I'm willing to give enough benefit of doubt to assume that messy plotting will not equate to writers undermining the underlying mythology they created

Which is what exactly? lol. They don't tell you shit about it. It's just like, "Will's gone and a scary monster has him from another dimension!" There's no real depth to it, which is the only thing that kinda irked me about the show, but it's so well fucking done, I honestly didn't even care that much. I'm not even sure they expected a sequal; and, tbh, I'm really bummed they said the next season was going to be a continuation. Just let that one die and bring on better writers to do a better story in the same universe as an anthology style show.

I can see what you mean re: anthology. But the kids were the best part( no dids). Thinking of doing a second viewing, anyone watch it twice yet?

Disagree entirely. The more you try to explain these types of things, the less shit actually make sense. Give the viewers the essentials and let them fill in the blanks.
Don't pull a Lost.

anthology makes no sense for a show mostly driven by it's actors

the mythology is simple but it leaves room to tons of possibilities, even if they kill off 11 (which they obv wont because Sheriff/eggo):

who were 1-10
what other experiments was the lab doing
what else lives in the upside down
what does the sheriff know
whats the implication of Will flipping back/forth between the real world and upside down
etc

and yea Tommy is right, most of this shit doesn't even need to be fully explained, just prodded at and used as a base for more kids mugging and Hobbs being surly and Steve being a dreamboat or whatever

Yeah. Essential questions like is Steve Harrington actually Jean-Ralphio's real father?

Between this, GOT, and Curb Your Enthusiasm, it's going to be a great next 6 months of television
