New TV Shows Premiering This Month (January)

Post by Dan »

Here’s what’s premiering for the month of January.

Ransom (CBS)

Ransom stars Luke Roberts as Eric Beaumont in a drama inspired by the real-life professional experiences of the world-renowned crisis negotiator Laurent Combalbert and his partner Marwan Mery. Eric’s team is brought in to save lives when no one else can. He understands criminals better than they do and uses his insight into human behavior to resolve the most difficult kidnap and ransom cases. Despite the stakes, he refuses to resort to violence, even when confronted by some of the most dangerous criminals in the world. While Eric’s considerable powers of manipulation make him the best at what he does professionally, they often complicate his relationships with family, friends and colleagues. His team consists of psych-profiler, Oliver Yates, ex-cop Zara Hallam, and aspiring investigator Maxine Carlson. Maxine, the newest member, is eager to prove herself but a dangerous secret from her past may pose a threat that even the great Eric Beaumont is unable to resolve. (Premieres January 1st)

The Mick (FOX)

The Mick is a no-holds-barred single-camera comedy that gives new meaning to the phrase “dysfunctional family.” Mackenzie aka “Mickey” (Kaitlin Olson, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) is a brash, two-bit hustler from Rhode Island who has spent her entire life shirking any semblance of responsibility. Lacking any drive, but in constant search of the next easy payday, Mickey is not without her charms. She’s smart, she’s fun, and despite all appearances, her head’s always in the game. She just needs a big win. That win kinda, sorta comes true when, looking for a handout, Mickey visits her estranged sister and billionaire brother-in-law in Greenwich, CT, but gets more than she bargained for, as this absurdly rich couple flees the country to escape federal fraud charges. In a surprising turn of events, Mickey must assume guardianship of their three high-maintenance and ill-parented children: Sabrina (Sofia Black D’Elia, The Messengers, Gossip Girl), an ambitious, 18-going-on-30-year-old who is a worthy adversary to Mickey; Chip (Thomas Barbusca, The New Normal, Grey’s Anatomy), 13, an arrogant, entitled neo-con-in-the-making with an extremely punchable face; and Ben (newcomer Jack Stanton), seven, an adorably fragile nerd.
The life that Mickey has wanted for so long now is within her reach – the mansion, the convertible, the swimming pool, the walk-in closet full of designer clothes. But as Mickey is well aware, nothing in life is free. The price? Transforming these outrageously spoiled children into honest, hard-working, decent members of society – something this foul-mouthed, debaucherous and completely out-of-her-element woman knows absolutely nothing about. Being a mother was never in Mickey’s game plan, but these kids desperately need a parent. And as irresponsible as Mickey has been her entire life, she may discover that responsibility and motherhood aren’t the buzzkill she always thought they would be. (Premieres January 1st)

Beyond (Freeform)

Holden, a young man who wakes up from a coma after 12 years, discovers new abilities that propel him into the middle of a dangerous conspiracy. (Premieres January 2nd)

With a strong track record of resolving unexplained paranormal activity, the O.P.O. responds to two different clients in distress. Whether they live in a haunted home or run a business plagued by spirits, the O.P.O. will come up with a solution…or sometimes an unconventional one to bring clients peace of mind and keep them spirit-free! Leader of the group, Defecio Stoglin, who grew up on the streets of LBC and has had a passion for the paranormal at a young age, is ready to take down one spirit at a time with his dynamic team who don’t take themselves too seriously but will get the job done! Rolling alongside Defecio in his ghost-killing RV is Jasmine Orpilla the eccentric resident medium, Dave Purdy the tech, Matty Richards the family friend and stand-up comic who Defecio takes under his wing and Maunda Oyin, the chief researcher who digs up the dirt on every investigation. For the O.P.O., they are ready to take on any ghost, anywhere, anytime. And at the end of the day, this paranormal stuff ain’t no joke! (Premieres January 5th)

Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music and not follow in his dad’s footsteps despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Now Archie has no one to mentor him, certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats. It’s all weighing heavily on Archie’s mind — as is his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).
Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves, which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother Alice (Mädchen Amick), aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between Veronica and Archie, even though Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty by making a play for Archie. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)... Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows. (Premieres January 26th)

Ronja, The Robber's Daughter (Amazon)

The epic 26-part story of a ten-year-old girl born on a stormy night in a mountain fort, surrounded by her parents and a loving band of robbers. She befriends the son of her father's rival and so begins the drama of her friendship and family loyalties. We watch as she explores and understands these key factors in her life, and discovers that seemingly irresolvable choices can finally be made with the help of love and understanding. (Premieres January 27th)

Z: The Beginning of Everything (Amazon)

Rise (Viceland)

We travel to Indigenous communities across the Americas to meet people protecting their homelands and rising up against colonization. (Premieres January 27th)

555 (Vimeo)

From the minds of Kate Berlant, John Early and Andrew DeYoung, 555 is an anthology miniseries of five short films that unfold in a stark, humid, surreality of Hollywood. These short, cinematic fairy tales are set in tinsel town, where status is everything and the stakes are high. The backdrop is big dreams, and in the foreground, the humiliations of clawing one’s way toward them. Each episode focuses on a fraught relationship between two characters, where ambition prevails over empathy. Among the wildly varied characters: a young Mama Rose type and her mute child, two sensual but ignorant acting students, an agent turned artist by tragedy and his partner who must watch his grotesque fall. Each episode zooms in on characters toiling in different corners of a Hollywood hellscape. Will greed, egotism, ignorance and desire consume them? Or can they escape dark fates by clinging to rare moments of tenderness? (Premieres January 31st)

Taboo is generating a lot of hype, but it feels like the type of project that might live up to it. Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott should be a winning combo for a cinematic FX mini-series

I'll give Taboo a shot, don't anything else really stood out. Sneaky Pete maybe?

Does anybody know if any good comedies are scheduled for release in 2017? Liked Atlanta and Vice Principals last year, haven't really seen much else worth noticing.

Will definitely check out Taboo.
Sneaky Pete sounds interesting, Ribisi has always been a really talented actor, he just wasted much of his career on bad roles.

Definitely Taboo. Sneaky Pete looks promising, I always liked Ribisi.

The Mick looks like it would make for a funny 90 min Adam Sandler movie, no idea how they plan to sustain this as a series.

Emerald City is kinda good looking, could be fun in a late 90s mini-series kind of way (like NBC's Merlin and the scifi channel Dune things).

The Archie Twin Peaks reboot is the most hilariously ill conceived shit ever, so retarded that it might actually work because it's so retarded.

Ran through Frontier in one night, an easy watch at only 6 eps x 45 min each. It's solid good-not-great timewasting.

I'm surprised Netflix isn't pushing this more with Momoa in the lead. It's kinda like a cheaper and less ambitious version of Taboo, set in Canada instead of London. A violent but charismatic grunting dude who's gone native wants revenge against an evil Big Business company led by an Evil Old White Man, etc. The lack of artistic aspirations works in the show's favor, it's very unpretentious about its aims, the plot just runs through a bunch of intrigue at a fast pace with a good amount of stabbings and arrows to the neck in the process. The characters aren't deep but engaging enough. The cast is probably the show's best asset, watching Momoa fuck up redcoats with enthusiasm while various evil white people scheme and glower with equal enthusiasm is really its best selling point.

Watched Sneaky Pete, thought it was pretty good. There was some parts where I thought well that's a little convenient but overall it was enjoyable. Interested to see how they go about season 2.
