Star Wars: Episode VIII (2017)

Post by Spartan »

Episode VIII got a title.
Was not happy about Rian Johnson's involvement in writing and helming the upcoming film and this title doesn't exactly fill me with much confidence. Still, I'm hoping my fears are wrong and it's better than The Force Awakens.

Luke's gonna die or at least it's gonna look like he died.

nobody died in empire. but i think i heard somewhere that this one won't hew as closely as ep7. they played it real safe with that one so now's time to take a risk on something original.

time to make an actually good movie. rogue one is an offshoot. it's not really a main title. time for them to actually harness the potential of this jedi shit cause it COULD be so dope.

Yeah I have similar doubts about Johnson, think he's overrated AF. He directed two of the best episodes of Breaking Bad, but both of those were late in the series run after it was a fine-tuned machine. His films aren't nearly as good. Looper wasn't nearly as good as everyone wanted it to be (although a lot of the blame for that goes to Joseph Gordon Levitt, who sucks in almost everything but is especially laughable when he tries to play a toughguy).

^JGL was perfect as robin: tough enough, but still batman's son.

i duno much about rian johnson but the possible upside is that he'll try something new. shouldn't stray too far off point; by now SW is a fine-tuned machine too.

First pic of the cast from the upcoming Han Solo film.

More hyped for this than The Last Jedi, tbh.

I'm into it but that looks like a cast photo from a saved by the bell-type 90s high school sitcom where Woodie plays the principal

also lol at how after the pointedly multi-ethnic Rogue One they just cast the whitest people alive and the obligatory Token for this one

Other than Woody and the Game of Thrones sloshpot, I have no idea who those cacs are. Wouldn't be surprised if Disney puts them in motion capture gimp suits and turns them into droids or aliens, like they did with Steve the Pirate.

I kinda hope they do actually, the one thing I didn't like and still can't quite shake about R1 was the lack of aliens and oddball creatures. I am hyped for the 'Would that it were so simple' guy to be Solo though, he's good.

About the Han Solo flick, am I the only one who can't really get in to new actors playing old characters? Solo especially more than the others, since Han Solo was my hero from the age of 3 or so on. To me, Harrison Ford IS the character. I'm sure this kid will be fine, but it just feels... wrong and weird to me. Hell, I'd rather watch a Ford Solo flick that tells the story of how he lost the Falcon before episode 7 takes place. Or literally any other two hour story from the last few years of his life post ROTJ.

^not as iconic a character, but josh brolin merked it as young tommy lee jones in the otherwise underwhelming MIB3.

Really hoped I would be wrong about this film, but my worst fears were confirmed. This film turned out to be pretty bad and suffered greatly from poor writing and how various elements just felt out of place and did not belong compared to the rest of the franchise. TFA played it way too safe; this went to the other extreme and did not feel like a SW movie. I thought it started off really promising at least, but then it just snowballed into one bewildering curve-ball after another. Steering clear of all spoilers for now.

Rogue One is easily the best of the three recent films.

Rogue was not that good. So easy to dismiss Spartans opinion as trash these days.

Hey man, IIRC this is the third time you've had a swipe at me.

Just judge The Last Jedi for yourself. I personally thought it sucked and Rogue One was a better movie, despite its obvious faults.

Second time.

Easy to see our opinions are quite opposite. But Ffs it’s 94% fresh on rotten tomatoes.

Yeah...using math what was I thinking? You know most of the respected reviews think it’s at least above average. Don’t be a twat sticking up for your internet buddy. Seeing Saturday morning
