been waiting for the trailer for months. the festival reviews, from both genre oriented critics and wider coverage, are overwhelmingly positive

Yes. This looks awesome. Anyone catch “mom and dad” also featuring Nic Cage?

Really love Cosmatos' visual style. Big fan of Beyond the Black Rainbow and I've been looking forward to this Cage flick for a while now.

theater screenings are going like wildfire apparently. I tried to hit a 4.50 on a day off yesterday and it was packed, the 7.20 after it was sold out completely for the next 4 days

Most definitely a movie worth seeing in a theatre.

Looks like Cage had to really dial it back for this one.

Trailer looks nuts. Saw it up on torrent site, going to check it out.

The Cage scene in the bathroom where he's screaming and drinking was just...wow. Someone needs to make a 2 minute long gif of it with sound.

There were a lot of individual pieces I really loved here but as a whole package I think it left me underwhelmed. Maybe I was expecting too much, and I think at this point I might just have 80's/grindhouse throwback fatigue. Hype is a motherfucker. I'm glad it exists though, this is probably as good of a thing as the 'vhs/steven king book cover font and carpenter-indebted score' aesthetic is going to produce.

That's how it felt when I watched Beyond the Black Rainbow, so perhaps my expectations were lower than some, but I've watched Mandy twice now and loved it just as much the 2nd time. I really love the overt way LSD is used/described throughout the flick. The visuals of the scene when they give Mandy the acid and introduce her to Jeremiah are next level, but not the main reason it is my favorite scene in the film. Cult movies I've seen always seem to be missing some level of misogynistic creepiness that I could never put my finger on, but that scene absolutely nails it and it's a joy to watch at the same time. Jeremiah describing/getting hype off his own song playing and Mandy laughing in his face as he cringes is spectacular. As creepy as anything in Texas Chainsaw Massacre for completely different reasons.

Without that scene, the rest of the movie wouldn't have the weight that it does.

need a nerd take on this - did you guys notice the axe-forging scene have some shots that looked like a direct reference to the shotgun sawing scene in Rolling Thunder? the fire reflecting in the sunglasses rang a bell immediately

I need to watch rolling thunder again but I wouldn’t doubt it.

I’d love to see a list of the visual references

This guy pretty much sums up my feelings about the film

I really enjoyed this film. Felt like an awesome 2 hour heavy metal music video.

Didn't really understand what the guy with the caged tiger was about. I understand the symbolism of the tiger in the context of the movie but not the character of the guy.

Nicky Cage feels misunderstood, it appears:

Nicolas Cage expresses 'frustration' with Cage rage internet meme

In an interview with Indiewire to promote his latest film Mandy, a gory action-horror in which Cage plays a revenger looking to take down a satanic biker gang, Cage said: “I’m sure it’s frustrating for [director] Panos [Cosmatos], who has made what I consider a very lyrical, internal, and poetic work of art, to have this ‘Cage rage’ thing slammed all over his movie … the internet has kind of done the movie a disservice.”

Whether to Jason of Philaflava or John Podesta, I will speak my fucking perspective openly

The frustration is understandable I guess, but it's partly due to their own marketing. The movie was presented to the world this as a phantasmagorical wild ride of violence and trippy visuals and Cage being crazy with a battle axe, but now they want it seen as a poetic work of art?

Bizarre film.

"I'll suck your dick, man!" was hilarious.

There is nothing deeper or profoundly substantive in the film or its narrative. This felt like Rambo: First Blood mixed with Drive sprinkled with Gaspar Noe.
