Movies that slipped under the radar...

Post by Rachel Hobozal »

Name some of your favorite movies that nobody seems to know about. Maybe you just happened to stumble upon it while flipping through the pay channels one night, or maybe you've known about it for awhile because it stars some actor you really check for.

Anyway, the point isn't how you found it, it's to tell us all about it so we can watch it ourselves.

I'll name a few: 'Best Laid Plans'. This movie stars Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, and Alessandro Nivola (Laurel Canyon). Ted Griffin (Matchstick Men, Oceans 11 & 12) wrote a great screenplay. It's a thriller, suspense type of flick, with plenty of great plot twists. The dialogue is witty and all characters play their roles perfectly.

'Chopper' is another movie that nobody I know has a clue about, yet I've seen it talked about on here a few times. This movie is hilarious but I'm not gonna write a synopsis or anything, since I have a feeling more of you've seen this than I'd expect.

"Suicide Kings"

Most of you probally know about it (since I'm pretty sure some of you are the IMDB incarnate), but I always have to explain it to people I know.

Christopher Walken, Jay Mohr, and Dennis Learly. Always loved that movie.

Includes the classic scene of Dennis Leary beating an abusive father with a toaster.

Very good pics, including Suicide Kings. You're right, a lot of people have seen these movies on this site, but I guarantee a lot of people haven't, as well.

Anyway, this is exactly what I was looking for. I love 'The Station Agent'.

This is an OK movie because the actors really outshine the shitty script and direction. Walken, Mohr and Leary just own this movie, but the rest is pretty fucking sub par.

If you enjoy this movie DO NOT watch the commentary, because you will realize that it was made by hacks and you will start to hate it.

Also I just remembered "Dead Man's Shoes". A great British revenge movie starring Paddy Consindine as a soldier who comes back to his home town to reek bloody revenge on the cunts who have been abusing his retarded brother. A great, great performance by Paddy.

Not sure if its available in the US though?

I'm a fan of Don Siegel's The Killers and Charley Varrick, but I don't think they're really obscure.

this post reminded me about an Ed Burns flick called Confidence

Crime flick... kind of in a Oceans 11/Italian Job vein, but not really

great dialogue

Ed Burns, Dustin Hoffman, Luis Guzman, Andy Garcia

not the best flick on the planet... but worth a watch... good story, good characters, great dialogue

It's actually a pretty big movie, but I think a lot of people sleep on Payback in terms of a really well put together funny flick.

I liked his whole spiel on the eel skin boots myself.

Good call on Best Laid Plans, it was the first flick in which I saw Terrence Howard and thought "that guy's good".

Isn't Lena Olin in that flick? I've seen it at the library, but have never gotten around to picking it up.

Good call on bound, Gershon is heat.

See, to me, Intacto is like an improved but still flawed version of Sexy Beast-beautiful scenery and colors, but it's still missing something I can't put my finger on.
I really enjoyed Bubba Ho Tep...
good call

Living In Oblivion-This movie is underground hip hop in a nutshell. From the character based on DiCillo's bad experience with Brad Pitt (during the making of Johnny Suede) to the eye patch to the midget monologue, this movie kicks all kinds of ass. True story: DiCillo got the cast to chip in money to get this film done. Can't go wrong with Steve Buschemi on board as the frustrated underground director trying to get his movie done.

Miranda-A flick starring John Hurt and Christina Ricci. Whoever scouted the locations should have been paid doubletime. A cool story about a conwoman and the guy whose life she changes.

Box of Moonlight-Another DiCillo flick, this being the earliest Sam Rockwell movie I've seen. Keep in mind, this was before his oddball/hipster schtick got tired. John Turturro comes through with yet another dope performance as a 9-5er whose life is about to change. Note the similiarities between parts of this movie and a national advertising campaign. This movie is notable (as is Living In Oblivion) for having Catherine Keener in a role other than Cruella deVille.

This is my kind of thread, thanks for starting it.
