Favorite album of the year?

Post by slimebucato »

For myself, I'd say Beck - Guero. I am new to Beck's work (aside from his mtv smashes) but this album is incredibly fresh to me. I enjoy all the songs and Beck's trippy lyrics especially. The beats (by the Dust Brothers, correct?) are incredibly catchy and well orchestrated as well. "Earthquake Weather" is probably my favorite track.

I am also in the dark about alot of the new releases, so hopefully someone will chime in this thread and open my eyes to something I will like alot.

That last Queens Of The Stone Age album is the only thing i've copped from the last 6 months so far this year
so that'll be my choice.

Since this is curb, non hip-hip from me:

Ryan Adams - "Cold Roses"
Mike Doughty (formerly Soul Coughing) - "Haughty Melodic"
(2 Discs) Soul Fire: The Majestic Collection (although its a compilation album)
Beck - "Guero"

Other Stuff I've enjoyed:

Spoon - "Gimme Fiction"
Team Sleep - "Team Sleep"
Jack Johnson - "In Between Dreams"
SOAD - "Mesmerize"
Aqueduct - "I Sold Gold"

Nothing has really stood out beyond all others to me yet.

I saw LCD Soundsystem a week or two ago and the god Jon Hiltz (ex-Born Against drummer/ owner of a legendary basement in Jersey that pretty much any 90's hardcore band worth seeing played at) was his soundman. I shouldn't have been so suprised, really, because that whole DFA Records scene are ex-hardcore kids.

Not heard the album, but "losing my edge" was a classic single.

I bought someone that DFA 3 CD box set as a birthday present and took the liberty of ripping myself a copy before I gave him it - its good, i'd only really checked The Rapture before from that lot.

I haven't bought a lot of new non-hip hop stuff this year - there's been too much old stuff i've been put onto by peeps here, as well as reissues.

Some dope new stuff I have got...
Death From Above 1979 - 'You're A Woman, I'm A Machine'

And some electronic stuff from Warp...
Autechre - 'Untilted'
Harmonic 33 - 'Music For Film Television And Radio'
The new DMX Crew EP

edit - Also, didn't Bloc Party drop an album this year? I don't know if you've all heard of them, they're from London and they're multicultural.

According to the UK music press they were also the best band EVER, but they seem to have fallen off the radar already - that has to be some kind of record???

The new album isn't as good as any of the singles preceding it, but it's still pretty solid. "Losing My Edge" is one of the funniest songs ever.

I couldn't get into that album. I tried, but it just didn't happen for me. Coldplay's dope, but it's getting a lot of hate on this board.

I talk shit on Coldplay just for the hell of it, I don't see anything wrong with them really, Im not a huge fan or anything, they are ok

I just dig Rage as a band, can't do no wrong in my book

Morello is the only reason I check for them now, but Chris Cornell just doesn't sound right with them. See, I buy the whole "Velvet Revolver" thing, but I can't buy into "Audioslave." But "Be Yourself" is a catchy ass tune.

M.I.A and Andrew Bird are pretty close too.

I bought the LCD Soundsystem album, but like much of the DFA output I just can't seem to get into it. I keep on trying, and there are always a couple songs that I end up loving, but for the most part I can't imagine listening to a lot of it outside of a live setting or dancing alone in your own room.

What the hell are you supposed to do when you listen to this stuff? Just sitting there doesn't quite do it. Despite my general ambivalence about the DFA output, I'm still pretty interested in the Juan McLean album for some reason.

I'm really digging it right now, although the consensus among fans seems to be that it's not very good. Lot's of piano led, minimal glam type stuff. Simple, almost perfect songs. Dope.

Hearing that LCD Soundsystem shit at a club is pretty fun, but other than that, I find it's really good walking music, you know what I mean? It's definitely active shit. Yo, check my blog for a DFA remix of that Nine Inch Nails song. It's pretty ill. I'm hearing the Juan McLean album is supposed to be wack though.

I already downloaded the NIN remix, just haven't listened yet. I've heard the same thing about the JuanMclean album, but I think i got caught up in The Fader/Other non-pitchfork hype machines.

Good blog by the way, its one of the few I check daily.

I saw LCD Soundsystem open up for The Pixies and Interpol the other night. Decent band for a tremendous show.
