Have we discussed Baby Huey & The Babsitters on here ?

The rotund Chicago soul legend who died before his one and only Curtis Mayfield produced album came out in 1971 on Mayfield's own Curtom imprint.

What an album. It's like vintage Stax mixed with the funked-up, wah-wah guitared-out Chicago soul sound
only 8 songs long and every one is a classic
"listen to me", "mighty mighty", "hard times" and his covers of "california dreamin'" and "a change is going to come" are the highlights.

It's relevent to rap as "listen to me" was one of the key songs Kool Herc used to spin at his 70s block parties
various songs have been sampled by Ice Cube, Eric B. & Rakim, Supercat, Lord Finesse, Ghostface and Big Daddy Kane
and Maseo from De La would often refer to himself as Baby Huey due to his resemblance to the tubby soulster.

The various pictures of him on the album are great, especially the one of him in an ankle length robe and pinstripe pants standing by a book shelf
now, if someone would reissue his early, impossible to find singles...

Who got love for the Huey-meister..?

From my buddys house I'm afraid to come outside
Although I'm filled with love I'm afraid they'll hurt my pride
So I play the part I feel they want in me
And I pull the shades so I won't see them seeing me

Hard Times is easily in my Top 25 songs of all time...I pretty much hear this song everyday..

Album definitely appreciated.

Word
it just got reissued earlier this year on vinyl and cd so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

"Runnin'" is the sleeper track on here. It's better than Mayfield's later version.

almost every joint on this album has been sampled... that should tell you something

not to mention its hefty price tag for an OG copy (usually in the 50-100 range, and sometimes more)
