Even used they are fucking expensive. Earlier ones aren't worth the money I don't think, they didn't start putting in all the crazy special features till later and the quality was not always impecable. There is a good reason why they're gonna re-release a bunch of Kurosawa, compared to what they do now the old ones suck ass

Not all the old ones. I'm not sure how old you mean, but like the Killer and Hard Boiled were both pretty extensive DVDs considering what else was being put out at the time. As were Spinal Tap, Robocop, Brazil, Third Man, and probably a couple more. And they still put out bare-bones stuff, like the Rebel Samurai set recently. Those discs don't even have trailers on them.drizzle wrote:Even used they are fucking expensive. I didn't feel like this deserved a new thread, so...
Had some extra money and instead of doing something useful like getting new clothes (something I haven't done in 4-5 years) or fixing my car, I took advantage of Borders' "buy 3 DVDs, get the 4th free" thing.
So within the span of two weeks, I grabbed movies that had been recommended to me or I had heard about, and ended up with...
Au Hasard Balthazar
Band Of Outsiders
The Battle Of Algiers
Kagemusha
La Strada
Le Samourai
Naked Lunch
Port Of Shadows
Ran
Rebel Samurai Box Set
Shoot The Piano Player
The Third Man
Throne Of Blood
Ugetsu
Videodrome
The Wages Of Fear
Other than The Battle of Algiers, La Strada, Ran and Videodrome, I had never seen any of these before. And I loved each one. I was just blown away by how great Criterion really is at picking kick-ass flicks every damn time.
The next 4 will probably be my last, I want to get The Virgin Spring, Rashomon (which I've seen), Stray Dog and Hearts And Minds.
So that's my little Criterion Collection appreciation post.

I'm drunk right now and I apologize. but CRITERION is that shit.
i need to start trusting banks so I can get a credit card and take advantage of that Deep-Discount shit y'all be on.

we were bitching about that before in here, some of the early ones they put out are nothing special in terms of packaging and extras. I have Wu-tang Collection dvds that come with more and better shit that their current editions of Yojimbo and Sanjuro.Martin wrote:a few weeks ago they had all criterions on sale at deepdiscount. i got long good friday and branded to kill.
guess what the only special feature was on long good friday. FUCKING COLOR BARS.

the first four are off the chain, Branded to Kill and Wages of fear being my favorites of the bunch. If you like branded to kill definitely get Tokyo Drifter if you haven't yet, and there are other Criterions by Suzuki that are supposed to be good as welldarkwingduck wrote:-Ran
-Wages of Fear
-The Seventh Seal
-Branded to Kill
-The Bad Sleep Well
these 5 are on my UP NEXT purchase list...Thoughts? Suggestions?
What's the last one?

Get diaboliques too, if you haven't already. Actually just get everything Clouzaut did period, you won't be disappointedStormShadow wrote:With Wages of Fear, get the new two disc special edition. I'm sure it's better than the regular one I have.

I dont know if any of you guys have been to Criterionforum.org, but those people take their Criterions FUCKING SERIOUSLY.
I would never want to get involved with that forum.
They have fifteen seperate forums. Granted they arent all about the Criterion Collection but STILL.
They have a huge list of possible upcoming Criterion releases, which is very cool.
anyway, new criterions on the way....
334 - Harlan County, USA
337 - A Nos Amours
338 - Equinox (1970)
^I'm not 100% sure, but I think that might be a joke.
It looks convincing as hell though. Dope cover.
