Based on the Marquis de Sade's "120 Days of Sodom", Salo takes place during the tail end of World War II. Knowing the gig is up, four members of a Fascist party make a pact and kidnap young children off the street then ship them up to a remote castle. There, they use the children to fulfill their darkest desires.

The children are forced into group sessions and made to listen to some of the disturbing stories of their elders, ranging from young sexual encounters to being defecated on. That's not all, though. They are raped, sodomized, forced into oral sex, humiliated, tortured and in a scene that is definitely a stomach turner, forced to eat their own feces.
---------------------------------------------

Doesn't sound like a good movie to me, but I guess there's a market for it.

^^^ so I read that this is the most disturbing, and violent film ever made. So fucked up that the director was assasinated for making it...

Is this the flick where someone straight razors someones EYE?

uhhhhh. Not sure if this is my cup of tea.

No, that's Un Chien Andalous, probably spelled it wrong. Salo's just kind of dull. It goes for that much because people like rare shit. It's a bragging thing. Or completists. And dude, check out their laser disc section. Criterion was putting out insane movies on laserdisc. Now that dvd is such a big moneymaker there's no way they'd be able to put those kind of movies anymore.

Ah, I had a feeling we'd be seeing some Louis Malle. The Cleveland Cinematheque has been playing a grip of his movies this month, including some re-releases, so I figured that meant Criterions were on the way. I'm also guessing that his first movie, Elevator to the Gallows, will be coming too.

That shit is necessary - the transfer on the ones that are out now is grainy as hell

Another good one -

CLASSE TOUS RISQUES - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052698/

This is supposed to be out on Criterion soon as well. This was actually playing last night at the film forum here, I had to make a hard choice between seeing it and the Bigg Jus show. I went with Bigg Jus, probably a mistake, the show wasn't as good as I hoped

I don't think i ever actually mentioned it. I'm in NY (Brooklyn) most of the time, some time in NJ, so i'm in a good spot for screenings, probably the best besides LA and SanFran. I try to catch what I can, but I miss a shitload because of work etc...

On the other hand, I am paying the salary of at least 2 clerks at Kim's Video (local indy/underground media store) and the bootleg guys I go to for new asian flicks come out from behind the counter to shake my hand, so it evens out.

provocative.

that's cool. I'm always envious of people who can actively seek out and go see any movie they want all the time, if that makes sense.

I'm not exactly living in a film hotbed

Fantastic post/sig combo BTW - EDIT: for some reason I thought your post was only that one word, loses a bit of impact with the other stuff in it.

I know exactly what you mean above. Where you at if you don't mind me asking?

I just watched Le Samourai and Le Cercle Rouge, and I thought they were dope. Reading John Woo's thoughts on Melville reminded me of how much I want to pick up Woo's best on DVD. Anyone know if Criterion will ever re-release The Killer or Hardboiled? Do they re-release often?

They've re-released a couple things (M, Wages of Fear recently, some Kurosawas in 2006), but no, I don't think they'll be doing any of John Woo's stuff any time soon because they don't have the rights to it any longer.

Damn it! Yeah, I saw a new copy of Hardboiled at Ameoba but it was crazy expensive. I guess I'll just get some Asian versions.

I realized last night I'm on the way to having a nice stack of netflix burned criterions . Check it out:

Third man
Rififi
Yojimbo
Sanjuro
A bande aparte
Brazil
Breathless
Le Circle rouge
Les Diaboliques
Discreet Charm of the Bourjuasie (sp?)

On the way:
Ran
Harokiri
Shoot the Piano Player
Wages of fear
Pickup on South Street
Dr Mabuse

15 total, at avg. 30$ comes to $450 without tax. That's crazy, i'm kicking myself for bying any of them previously. Fuck collecting, seriously
