Richard Linklater - Waking Life

kinda dope if you're in the mood for philosophy, which I was. Honestly, the animation technique seemed like a gimmick to keep the audience from getting bored at all that talking though. There was a lot of interesting material in there that I'd like to find more about in the future, but in the meantime it's a pretty nice semi-sequel to Slacker, even if it's nowhere near that level of dopeness. the big difference seems to be that slacker aknowleged the innate pretentiousness of the material without writing itself off...whereas this tries to keep a straight face while being pretty ridiculous.

Very interesting though. Recommended.

Bullet Boy

Gun culture goes under the microscope in Bullet Boy, Saul Dibb's powerful and moving directorial debut. Ashley Walters (aka So Solid Crew's Asher D) and newcomer Luke Fraser deliver compelling performances in this low-budget British drama, about a freshly-released jailbird who struggles to go straight on the mean streets of Hackney. On paper the clich

David Cronenberg - Naked Lunch

Awesome movie. Not nearly as fucked up as I expected, just a crazy spy movie on drugs with a really cool studio-look from the master of Canadian horror. :ohcanada:

Trainspotting- Cool, sometimes funny depiction of a group of heroin addicted friends. Definitely worth watching. 8.5/10.

platoon-never actually seen all of this so I had to netflix it. dope ass movie. you really get a feeling for the characters that charlie sheen has to take orders from. dafoe was dope in this. sheen was good as well. i hate him though. 9.5/10.

billy elliot-another scottish film. this was a little too boring for me, but it was a decent movie. the first half seemed to drag on for me but then it picked up in the 2nd half; and it ended pretty in a pretty gay way. literally. 6.75/10.

Monster-In-Law * 1/2: The triumphant return of Jane Fonda, trapped in the umpteenth watered down run-of-the-mill J.Lo dramedy flick. It's pretty hilarious how they hook Jenny from the block up with a whitey in just about all of her tired ass romantic comedy flicks (this is common knowledge), this time linking her with the styrofoam-like vartan (whose five-o'clock-shadow remains pristine). Their courtship is pretty much left to the imagination as after a series of random run-ins, they suddenly get married. Fonda does rock though, as an over-the-hill TV journalist in the vein of Barbara Walters. And in the prescence of such lightweights as Vartan and Lopez, she seems even more translucient. It's almost as if she too is pissed that she's in this flick, throwing rampaging tantrums that shock life support into this flick like a defibrillator. Wanda Sykes (in what, her fourth role as a sassy servant?) quips consistently, but unneccessarily throughout. Quite lame from start to finish although I did have a nice conversation with my mother in the middle of it, we talked about our trip to Florida and Deivi Cruz playing for the Nats.

Wong Kar Wai - As Tears Go By

Wong's first film, this didn't have his obtuse style or visual trademarks down pat yet, but its a very enjoyable drama/gangster-romance that reminded me of a more melodramatic and cheesy Meanstreets. Similar subject, but treated in a much more stylised and slick 80's HK way. The cinematography has that "80's HK overlit" look that I personally find pretty cool: it makes HK 15 years ago look more future-punk than most sci-fi films. Maggie Cheung is of course, beautiful and there's enough violence and beatings to keep the commercial audience in line (something he'd lose later).

Nowhere near WKW's peak with Chunking Express and Fallen Angels, but imo way better than Days of being Wild.

gonna see 2046 tonight. Finally.

Wong Kar Wai - 2046

Beautiful, if flawed film. On the up side its a lot less conservative and classicist than "In the Mood for Love" which really disapointed me. 2046 combines the maturity of that film with his more freewheeling and kaleidiscopic aesthetic of his younger period: you don't necessarily know where the film is going but in the end it all comes together and its actually quite haunting. All the women in this film are shot fucking beautifully. Wong Kar Wai would be the best porn director ever. Actually EVERYTHING in this film is beautiful. The man and his team (William Chang, Chris Doyle) are just leagues above everyone else at what they do. It's like the 90's Bulls of cinematography: no competition.

the bad part is that this was obviously a tremendously difficult film to put together. WKW shot a ton of footage for a scifi film, then got tired of it and made In the Mood for love. Then decided to integrate the characters from in the mood for love into the scifi film...except he went overboard and barely ended up using the Sci-fi stuff. Bad mistake as while the introductory sequence and occasional flashed from the future are great symbolically, the 15 minute interlude is just utterly useless. It felt like he was too in love with what he shot and figured he should somehow use it. I really wish he would have cut that out the film and used it to make an entire other film, as the set design is CRAZY dope but it has no business in the current film.

I'm a huge fan so I'm biased, but great film in the tradition of his best work.

Today I watched Red Eye which was entertaining fluff. Good stuff to take your mind off things for 85 minutes. Plus I now have a crush on Rachel McAdams.

I've been keeping track of every movie I've seen this year on another board if anyone cares to check it out.

I thought 2046 was kinda weak.. I'd like to see it again though, I havent seen it in probably a year
Christopher Doyle is definitely one of my favorite cinematographers.
Extra awesome that they let him have a commentary track on "Last Life in the Universe"
Anyone know if he's got commentary on anything else?

I watched The Wild Bunch for the second time in my life yesterday (very embarrasing)
Incredible movie. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is probably still my favorite western, but this is second I think.
Granted, I havent seen a ton of westerns, but still.
Both William Holden and Robert Ryan give great performances.

^he has a commentary track on that? that's gotta be awesome. My friend met him at a conference in Seatle. said the man is constantly hammered yet simultaneously, very on point.

I think 2046 was even more "open" than other WKW films in that it seems unfocused until the end when it all kind crystalises. if its playing in a theater in your area I recommend seeing it in a theater environment with no distractions and a good print. While I personally haven't LOVED a WKW film since Fallen Angels, I'd still rate it above ITMFL and (probably) Happy Together (which I need to see again before deciding).

The Wild Bunch is indeed essential viewing. Peckinpah at his best.

Winged Migration - I just caught this on an HD channel. This film was beautifully shot. For those who haven't seen it, it's a documentary on the migration of birds throughout 7 continents. You follow the birds as they migrate to their destinations and then back again. Highly recommended, especially if you can catch it in high def.

^^^ I've said it before and I'll say it again, Winged Migration is one of the most, if not the most, amazingly shot movies I've ever seen. More in the sense of "how in the fuck did they get that shot" than anything else.
I dont even know if "amazingly shot" is correct grammar, but fuck it, it was amazingly shot.

I just watched A Very Long Engagement for the first time, and it was as good if not better than I expected it to be.
I had one major problem though, and it was the ending. It just didnt sit well with me for some reason.
I'm still trying to figure out why...maybe I just wanted some sort of closure.
Regardless, it was a really good movie.
I'm kinda glad I never watched this in the theater, cause I wouldve missed probably %60 of the story. I was constantly having to rewind to read the subtitles cause I would just find myself staring at how beautiful the film looked. It looked absolutely amazing, and I really didnt expect any less.
And I had absolutely no idea Jodie Foster of all people was in this movie.
Kinda threw me for a loop.

watched Unforgiven for the first time last night.
Excellent, excellent movie.
Clint, Morgan and especially Hackman all give great performances.
I REALLY wanted to see more of Richard Harris.
The writing was excellent, and the pacing was perfect.
I can see why this won the Oscar for Best Editing.
I cant believe Malcolm X wasnt nominated for Best Picture, after seeing all the other movies that were nominated in 92. Ridiculous.

I also went and saw The Aristocrats yesterday.
After hearing about how funny it was, I was pretty diappointed.
Sure, it had its moments, but it wasnt gut-busting.
The editing was out of fucking control. Every fucking second there would be a cut. Even if it's a scene of one guy talking (Richard Lewis for example), they just filmed him with 2 cameras and constantly cut between the two.
I guess they thought only people diagnosed with severe ADD would want to watch this movie.
I found it funny that there was a warning outside the theater saying that there would be no refunds for people who walk out after half an hour.
Surprisingly enough, a couple people did walk out.
What were they expecting?
Maybe they just thought it sucked, but regardless of that, I dont think I'd ever walk out on a movie I paid to see....unless it was just draining my life.
I would recommend watching this if you can get into the theater for free or when it comes out on DVD, borrow it from someone who rents it.

Unforgiven - 9/10
The Aristocrats - 5.5/10

Unforgiven is excellent, yes.

About the "walking out of a movie you paid for" thing: I've only wanted to walk out of the theater once in my life, and that was when my friend Paul (who went away to college and I hadn't seen in a long time) made a bunch of our friends see 'Dude, Where's My Car'. After the first ten minutes I wanted to kill everyone in the theater (especially Paul), so I got about three friends to agree to leave, but Paul and his brother begged us to stay, so we did. It was more grueling and painful than the time I had to piss out my kidney stones.

Roman Polansky - The Fearless Vampire Hunters

this SUCKED. The best part of the film was Sharon Tate followed by the dope opening credits animation. The movie itself was a comedy that didn't make me laugh. sure it had a references to classic vampire movies but even that couldn't hold it together. highly disapointing since Polansky is usually a sure bet.

TAE GUK GI: The Brotherhood of War

This has actually been sitting on my shelf for a long time, and I finally got around to watching it last night.
The movie is a story of two brothers, Lee Jin-Seok (the younger brother) and Lee Jin-Tae.
Jin-Tae works tirelessly to earn money to send his brother to college, and also support his mother and his fiance. He does this by shining and repairing shoes.
One day, Jin-Seok and Jin-Tae get "accidently" drafted for the Korean war.
WILL THE BROTHERS' BOND REMAIN STRONG OR WILL THE MADNESS OF WAR TEAR THEM APART??? (I made that up, pretty sweet huh)

This movie is very very good, if a bit melodramatic.
It's also very anti-war, but more than anything it's focused on the relationship of the two brothers.
The way this relationship changes throughout the movie, and the impact that the war has on them, result in an interesting, believeable, and unforgettable experience.
The acting is pretty solid. The younger brother is a bit over-the-top (no stallone) at times, but it doesnt detract at all.
The supporting females do a good job, but hardly have any screen time.
The cinematography is good too. Nothing groundbreaking, though.
Lots of grays and browns and dark greens and blues. It looks like a war movie.

8.5/10
Highly recommended

^my favorite Leone. In fact, my favorite Western (yes, I like it better than Yojimbo)

New York Stories

Scorcese's Life Lessons was the best thing here. The man is untoucheable. Copolla's Life without Zoe was a disgusting fluff piece. I disagree with the notion that ALL the man's stuff since the 70's has been bad but this was sacharine movie that recalls Musolini era White Telephone drama. Woody Allen's Oedipus Wrecks was funny if innessential.

all in all, an ok movie but not any of these's guys best.

Save the Green Planet

Dope cult movie. some boring crime-movie parts stuck in the middle but the beginning and end are great. I hope the director gets more chances to work cuz he has potential.

best use of "Over the rainbow" in 60 years too.

I have mixed feelings about Save the Green Planet.
I thought the ending was just absolutely ridiculous.
The whole movie looked fantastic though
And the acting, while over-the-top, was on point.

I'd like to watch it again sometime though
