There wasn’t an order of best to worst in that list, FYI. I was tossing out random good ones, just to clarify. I’m sure you’ll love some of them and be indifferent about a few too.

Interesting. I have seen a lot of Westerns as a kid but they are all foggy to me. I know I have seen a few John Wayne flicks several times over, will be fun to see if this sparks any memories. Going to toss it on in a bit.

Mustang 2019
Maybe it's the low-mid level fascination I have with prison movies (although I have to say papillon helped kill this). But I really like this. And the story and the cinematography and the acting. All really well done and emotionally efficacious. Music is basically perfect too.

Roma (2018) - Beautiful and a bit boring. But the scene at the beach made it all worth it. Probably my top movie moment of 2018.

Burning (2018) - Very strong film on all fronts and it stays with you. The jazzy scene on the porch midway through was pure cinema bliss.

The Favorite (2018) - The humor, characters and story didn't connect with me but everyone else in the cinema, my gf and a bunch of old people, seemed to love it.

Lords of Chaos (2018) - Norwegian death metal faggots attempt to out edge-lord each other in this soapy and formularic, overlong film. The quip at the end really pissed me off too.

Leave No Trace (2018) - More or less a dud from the Winter's Bone lady.

One Cut of the Dead (2018) - This meta-zombie Japanese slice of insanity has to be seen to be believed.

Dogman (2018) - Cool film about a nice guy who lets himself be tormented by the neighborhood bully.

Shoplifters (2018) - No director does films about families better than Koreeda.

First Reformed (2018) - Seriously grim stuff and very topical considering how people are losing their minds over uninformed climate hysteria. Can't say I enjoyed it but its a good film.

Piercing (2018) - My favorite Japanese writer is the other Murakami, Ryo, who wrote the book Miike's Audition is based on. This is one of his weaker novels and it's a fairly weak film as well though I respect the attempt.

Cannibal Club (2018) - Brazil seems to be making more genre films these days and this was a cool take on the already wellworn cannibal metaphors.

David Brent: Life on the Road (2016) - The movie itself is a mess and very meanspirited but the songs are fucking hilarious. While the actual film is forgettable I still listen to the soundtrack for a laugh.

Bulworth (1998) - I only knew about the film because of the awesome song with peak-Prodigy but it really is worth checking out if you haven't. Strong wigga-vibes here "wheres the nappy dug-out? that's where you get the bug out" and Halle Berry exclaiming "Oh, Bulworth. You know you my nigga!" The film foreshadows a current debate about how Democrats are using black people as vote-cattle and you could probably say a bunch of stuff about how it relates to the Trump-era if you wanted to be boring.

Golden Balls (1993) - Bardem in his younger days was such a cool actor and this is the second of two good films he made with Bigas Luna.

Highlife 2019
Pattinson Binoche
Space drama. Interesting. Tempo is wonderful. The cast fills the screen with this nice slow lethargy. Fine use of emotion. Interesting appeals to the senses.

American Animals (2018)
Liked the presentation and found it seriously funny in places. Evan Peters was really good, but the film as a whole wasn't quite captivating enough to maintain my interest. Worth a watch, though.

Suspiria (2018)
Still undecided whether I like this or not. Felt like it took the opposite turn in every creative way in order from the original classic movie because it had no other choice. Occasionally it worked, but the obvious Swinton wankfest and the bloated expositional padding dragged on way too much. Also, Thom Yorke's emo wailing came nowhere near as successful to Goblin's prog rock electronica antics.

I liked the dance scenes though; the contortion scene was the major highlight for me.

Hoaxed (2019) - A who's who of Pro Trump Youtube. It's a very tendentious docu but a fairly entertaining takedown of fake news in the legacy media.

Donnybrook (2018) - This is Midwest misery porn in concentrated form with a healthy portion of violence. Would only recommend to certain viewers but its good for what it is.

Knife+Heart (2018) - This gay giallo brings the laughs. We follow a crew of gay porn film makers and actors who are stalked by a masked psycho.

The Realm (2018) - De la Torre is my favorite actor these days and his performance here, as an arrogant and cornered corrupt politician hits all the right notes. The film goes from political drama to fullblown thriller halfway and manages to entertain throughout. One of the better films from last year in my estimation.

The Night Eats the World (2018) - Nice take on the zombie genre dealing with loneliness and isolation. I also quite liked where it went towards the end.

101 Reykjavik (2000) - Amusing, dark slacker comedy with an unmistakable Scandi flavor.

Did you like it?

Dragged Across Concerete (2018) - Zahler pretty much hits another homerun, even if it isn't as emphatic as his previous film. The casting of Mel Gibson is really an inspired choice and he carries much of the movie. At this point it feels like Zahler has surpassed Saulnier as the most interesting North American director, especially because hes willing to piss against the wind and revive themes and archetypes from the 70's which are unfashionable today.

The Day of the Jackal (1973) - A hitman is hired to take out Charles de Gaulle in this tightly knit and classy political thriller. I would have liked a slightly more charismatic lead, someone like Steve McQueen, but that's a minor complaint.

Long Shot 2019
Seth Rogan Charlize Theron. Just another feather in Charlizes cap. Best actress going right now? Hell yes. This movie was surprisingly funny. Rogan is doing pretty well at that whole life lessons for grownups thing. That said it's not like I'm dudes biggest fan. I can really only take so much of that one way to relate.

Greta (2019) - Neil Jordan made this 90's throwback thriller starring Isabelle Huppert. Not a great movie but it's engaging and silly fun.

The Guilty (2018) - Danish thriller about a 911 operator. Jacob Cedergren gives a powerful performance in this single location film in real time. Was very impressed with this.

Your Son (2018) - Director of home invasion thriller Secuestrados released this revengefilm filmed in Seville on Netflix. It's a lot more realistic than the standard Deathwish template and has a great twist towards the end.

Winged Migration (2001) - Relaxing docu with lots of shots of flying birds. Would have loved more narrating and some more exotic birds.

The Seduction (1982) - Limpdicked thriller to watch during nights of insomnia.

Grey Gardens (1975) - Cult docu about eccentric ladies living in a decaying mansion. After half an hour it started to get annoying and there was no real payoff for sticking with it.

The Laughing Policeman (1973) - Rather poorly paced cop thriller with Walther Matthau, who is the clear highlight here.

Second Breath (1966) - Not my favorite Melville noir but it has some great moments.

Watch some movies FFS

Trauma (2017) - This Chilean gorefest packs a really heavy punch and qualifies as watchable extreme cinema. The subtext about Pinochet didn't convince me entirely but it's a decent shot at reckoning with a nation's troubled past through hyperconfrontational images and story, albeit not on the same level as A Serbian Film, which this film is often compared to online.

Lo and Behold (2016) - Herzog fumbles through many elements of the online world in what was apparently meant to be a series rather than a feature. Ironically the most interesting part, by far, was about the people who chose or had to live offline. I would have loved a whole docu about that.

Whore's Glory (2011) - This docu is about prostitution in Thailand, Bangladesh and Mexico. The Thai segment is an interesting warm-up to the gruesome conditions of sexworkers and Bangladesh and the sad last part about the Mexican prossies. The lack of narrating worked well here and some of the women give very memorable testimonies.

Happy People (2010) - Herzog follows the lives of Siberian trappers in this meditative and calm portrait. I could have watched four hours of this easily. Perhaps his second best docu after the amazing Grizzly Man.

Rescue Dawn (2006) - Christian Bale has to survive in the Laotian jungle after a planecrash during the Vietnam War. Couldn't help but compare it to Tsukamoto's more recent Nobi which I thought was far superior.

The White Diamond (2004) - Herzog goes to the Guyanese rainforest in this docu which is hard to summarize. The narrative is rather freeflowing and kept thinking it would be the perfect film to watch on acid with it's striking imagery and odd characters.

You gotta watch Little Dieter Needs to Fly, the doc is way better than the adaptation of the same story in Rescue Dawn.

Not sure how many of his earlier docs you've seen, but the ones from the 90s and earlier are even better than his more recent stuff.

Separate note, I'm assuming you're loving Too Old To Die Young?

Looking at his filmography on Wiki I'm realizing he made way more documentaries than I thought. And not only later in his career, as I assumed. I think I've seen all of the post-Millenium ones by now but nothing from before that. Lots to dig in to. What I really enjoy, oddly more than anything, is his soothing Deutsch accent when narrating.

TOTDY is making me cry manly, neon lit tears of joy these days.

Diego Maradona (2019)

Might be the best sport documentary since James Toback's Tyson, which is apt since they're analogue figures in their respective sports with similar trajectories. Insane footage, insane story - particularly with how his reign at Napoli came to an end after Argentina beat Italy at Italian '90. Only flaw for me is that his U.S.A '94 World Cup comeback/goal/drug test/suspension is dealt with via a brief postscript montage. That's a way too important/iconic part of the Maradona story to be an afterthought.

Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) - Didn't dislike this as much as a lot of other people. In fact I rather liked it.

The Intouchables (2011) - Very late to get around to watching this but the film is every bit as good and charming as its reputation.

Barbed Wire Dolls (1976) - One of the sleazier WIP films. Franco directed this mess with an unforgettable fake slow motion scene which has to be seen to be believed.

drizzle wrote:The Favourite - I was cool with Dogtooth, hated The Lobster and didn't bother with Sacred Deer, but damn I loved the hell out of this. Starts of as a hilariously acerbic rivalry, then gets at something deeper and darker about love, vanity and social climbing that builds to a pretty devastating final shot. Definitely one of my favorites for this year.

Fyre (2019) - Really funny docu about the trainwreck Insta festival. Made me think of similar situations where someone you know plans an event and you try to warn them it will be a disaster but the person doesn't back down before its too late.

Under the Silver Lake (2018) - This meandering conspiracy slacker noir is far from as bad as its reputation.

We (2018) - A movie about transgressive and taboo busting teenage sex has no right to be this boring.

Friendly Beast (2017) - Mad Brazilian crime horror about a robbery gone wrong.

All the Money in the World (2017) - Not a masterpiece or upper tier Scott but a very enjoyable thriller none the less.

My Life Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (2014) - Refn's wife, incidentally a relative of Fritz Lang, documents the Refns and their stay in Bangkok during the shooting of Only God Forgives. It's an engaging look at the Refn family and a fun glimpse in to NWR's world.

Attenberg (2010) - Lanthimos' collaborator put out her own film shortly after Dogtooth. It's really weird as you'd expect and deals with heavy themes such as the death of a parent and a 23 year old woman discovering her sexuality. I find it a bit difficult to form any sort of opinion about this film.

Tyson (2008) - Awesome look Iron Mike's life and personality. Very inspirational and interesting.

Wheel of Time (2003) - Herzog documents a Buddhist ritual in this calming and pleasant docu.

36th Precinct (2004) - Certainly a top 10 police film of the 00's and probably the best in the genre from Europe in that decade.

yea Under The Silverlake a was a pleasant attempt at staging stoner/slacker noirs as an ambiance, it's not a great movie and it would probably drive you nuts if you need focused narratives but if you're ok with it just kinda drifting along it's pretty chill.

I like that there's maybe a big twist in the end if you feel like thinking about it, but if not that's pretty chill too, the movie works either way.

High Life (2019) - If you wanted a dull and technically accomplished art house film about people fapping in deep space then your prayers have been answered.

The Golden Glove (2019) - Second year in a row we get a serial killer film from a respected auteur. This one is about Fritz Honka of post war Hamburg and he is probably the greasiest killer since Joe Spinell. The film is absurdist and ugly with some very dark humour and also some very interesting and understated subtext about Germany finding its feet after WW2.

In Fabric (2019) - Strickland's most accessible film even if it's not your standard horror fare. Takes a drastic turn halfway through but I enjoyed the first half more. Gorgeously filmed with strong performances and some interesting true to life characters.

Memory: The Origins of Alien (2019) - A must for true Alien fans but at the same time I feel it sits somewhere between a fluffy DVD extra and a proper deep dive in the Alien universe.

Pity (2018) - Another strange Greek film which reminds me of Suntan. It's about a man who becomes addicted to grief and pity and it is very perceptive about human nature.

Inland Empire (2006) - Glorious rewatch. This is not Lynch's best but it has so many unforgettable moments that keep lingering in my head. If this was a bit more trimmed down and focused rather than bloated and self indulgent I think it could have been one of my favorite films.

Solo con tu Pareja (1991) - Cuaron's debut is a very enjoyable comedy about a player type who pisses off the wrong woman. This is his most enjoyable film for me along with the other Mexican comedy Y Tu Mama Tambien.

Piranhas (2019) - A film about adolescent thugs from Napoli based on a Saviano novel. It's an enjoyable mob film but also a bit formularic. It lacks the emotional depth of a top tier drama but also the action of a fully accomplished popcorn film.

Divine Love (2019) - An erotic and futuristic Christian film from Brazil which has many novel and interesting ideas which aren't fully utilized and a bit underdeveloped.

The Cleaning Lady (2018) - This horror had a lot of festival buzz but doesn't really deliver.

Mektoub, My Love (2017) - Very sensual and pleasant summer holiday film by Kechiche (Blue is the...) who has been damned by the media for allegedly harassing his actors and this film is basically Male Gaze: The Movie with 3 hours of leering at young women's bodies. I adored the experience and in particular Ophelie Bau's round butt.

Liberated (2017) - Documentary about hook up culture centered around some characters celebrating spring break. The director clearly wanted to prove a point and found subjects who were willing to tell him what he wanted to hear.

Born Strong (2017) - About the world's strongest men preparing for and competing in The Arnold Classic. A decent time killer for people with a passing interest in body building.

American Sniper (2014) - Skipped this when it came out but it's a pretty cool film.

Short Cuts (1993) - Having read the three major works of Carver this summer I was interested in seeing this Altman film where elements of some of his major stories are spliced together in intersecting plots. The film has none of what I enjoy about Carver's writing but in its own rights Short Cuts is allright.

Universal Soldier (1992) - My favorite movie as a kid and I haven't seen it since so it was cool to affirm I had excellent taste even back then. Not a dull moment here and I think this one should be in the action cannon.

i'd recommend jonah hill's directorial debut mid-90s. lots of fair comparisons to kids (1995), but much more succinct and purposeful. excellent casting. the characters feel very much like people i knew back then.

The Wild Goose Lake (2019) - Perhaps my favorite film of this year thus far. It has been criticized for being style over substance, which is clearly is but I have no problem with that. Basically it's a mainland Chinese gangster noir that looks like Refn and feels like Kitano. It is one of the most gorgeously filmed things I have ever seen and the bursts of violence throughout are absolutely epic. However the plot is a bit too convoluted for its own good and if some of that could have been edited out to make the film more lean it would perhaps be one of the very best films I have ever seen. Can't wait to watch it again but I sat in the theater and actually felt sad I won't ever get to see it again on the big screen where this film really belongs.

The Wolf Hour (2019) - Naomi Watts stars in this 70's throwback semi-thriller. It is intelligently written and absorbing if you can handle the slow pace.

Come to Daddy (2019) - Hipster Frodo goes to visit his estranged father and gets caught up in a really bizzare situation. This is a cool watch-and-forget flick.

Bacurau (2019) - This much praised Brazilian neo Western is tons of fun and has a great cameo from Udo Kier. I'm sceptical of the noble savages trope however and the director at the Q&A was a bit of a lefty drama queen prick in my opinion.

First Love (2019) - Miike made this funny and crazy action drama about a boxer and a prostitute who mistakenly becomes the target of multiple yakuza and the police. Very strong entry from him and probably his first film to get widespread acclaim since 13 Assassins.

Crawl (2019) - Aja's gator film is quite different from Piranha. This one is played with a straight face and does exactly what you would expect it to expertly. The CGI is a bit overbearing at first but you settle in to it as the movie moves along.

Bliss (2019) - Mad freak out horror about a painter who gets addicted to a strange drug and blood. The dialogue and characters leave a bit to be desired but it is filmed very well and establishes a panicky atmosphere very impressively.

Luz (2018) - It took forever for this German arthouse horror to find distribution but it was worth the wait. There are heavy Fulci vibes in this brief and captivating possession horror.

The Invisible Guest (2016) - This twisty thriller keeps throwing curveballs and does so brilliantly with a tightly knit script. Its yet another really fun thriller from Spain.

Terminator: Genisys (2015) - Starts out okay and falls apart completely. The actors and the banter between them is nothing less than cringe and pathetic and you'd have to have impossibly low standards to not lose interest in this halfway through. I do have hopes for Dark Fate however since Cameron is involved.

The Guest (2014) - Wingaard makes decent films and this is another one from that assembly line. Nice soundtrack.

In Bruges (2008) - Thought this was a phenomenal comedy of sorts and I'm not sure why it took me more than a decade to give it a go.

Night Hawks (1981) - The first half hour of so is the perfect gritty NYC thriller with a heavy 70's feeling and I sort of wished it would continue but watching Sly vs. Hauer for the remainder was also entertaining.

Cremator (1969) - Czech new wave horror classic but a bit too enigmatic and slow for my taste. The lead actor is incredible as a nazi sympathising cremator.
