Parasite (2019) - Bong's Cannes winner is a highly enjoyable dark comedy. As usual with Korean films it revolves around class issues like last year's highly praised Burning.

Diego Maradonna (2019) - Really pro sport docu about the most colorful character of the world's biggest sport. Would have liked to see more focus on his years before and after Napoli.

The Art of Self-Defense (2019) - The guy from Facebook Movie is hilarious in this comedy about a dweeb who joins a sinister karate class. A solid stream of laughs throughout makes this a decent watch.

Romolus & Remus: The First King (2019) - A film about the founding myth of Rome. Really well filmed with good acting but it didn't hold my attention well.

Black Coal, Thin Ice (2014) - Before his brilliant film The Wild Goose Lake this twisty noir about lonely people earned Diao his international reputation. It's a really meticulous crime film with an intricate plot and strong performances.

Near Death Experience (2014) - Houellebecq wanders around in the wilderness pondering suicide. It's a fairly dull film.

House of Games (1987) - This con artist thriller from Mamet requires you to suspend disbelief a bit but if you go with it you are rewarded.

The American Friend (1977) - Another take on the Ripley character with some amazing scenes and beautiful cinematography. It might actually have the best train segment of all time.

The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) - I was floored by this crime character study. Even if it is a rather simple story there is so much going on beneath the surface and every scene is gorgeous. I saw the edited home release cut and wonder how I would have felt about the full version with 30 more minutes.

i quite enjoyed the sisters brothers (2018). nice solid flick but was a huge box office flop. i loved the way it both fell into western tropes and upended them. very funny, but too dark to say it's a comedy. beautiful landscapes, shot mostly in spain by a frenchman doing his first english-language picture. acting is excellent. pheonix and reilly have a great dynamic where pain and humor are infused into seemingly every interaction. riz mc and gyllenhall are reunited as a buddy pair again after nightcrawler and are also solid. definitely worth your time.

Ben Affleck was actually pretty, pretty good in this role.
