Just when you thought Takashi Miike couldn't get any weirder...

A little frustrating at times but overall I dug it. Not for the faint of heart. Lots of stabbing and arterial spray.

Aaah. Izo. What can I say of thee?

Chances are, this film will piss you off. Action fans will be befuddled by the structure and think Miike went off the deep end. Intellectuals will abhor the violence and will thus miss the innovations. Finally, Miike fans of all sorts may leave the theater scratching their heads even more than usual out of sheer confusion. Wasn't feeling it that much. But I'm down to watch it again and look for some quality I missed the first time.

I watched this again yesterday on DVD and really enjoyed it even more than the first time. The boudhist/Karmic element is a lot clearer the second time around and I got to see a lot more symbolism. Really reminded me of oldschool European art-films: pretentious and unashamed of it, but with a completely Japanese feel this time around.

Difficult but good once you figure out what he's trying to say. The whole thing is a meditation on violence being a constant phenomenon of all incarnations of humanity

Very odd movie. I like Bob Sapp though.

For those who aren't in Mp3x (and because it's more likely to find an audience here), here's the clossest thing to the soundtrack to Izo

Code: Select all

They never released the raw acoustic version of the tracks used in the movie, but unnamed tracks 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 10 and 11 are studio versions of the same tracks. plus it comes with extra stuff including some english language work by the same singer, Tomokawa Kazuki

That's a bold statement.

I might have to move this to the top of my Netflix queue.

It's really different than Ichi. personally that was always one of Miike's most overrated ones and it got by on the strength of the violence rather than anything of substance. He's done a lot of iller (and weirder shit) like The Bird People of China, Izo and Gozu and nicer action pieces like Dead or Alive and Deadly Outlaw Rekka.

agreed 100%. Ichi doesn't really stand up to time, it used to be my favorite around 2002, but a few months ago I had to struggle to sit through it.
