I actually just finally copped the entire criterion 60's samurai joint. Samurai Rebellion is one of my favorite movies that criterion put me on to, can't wait to check out the rest.

So yeah, I have an extra copy of Samurai Rebellion if anyone's interested.

oh man, samurai rebellion is probably the best movie in there in the formal sense, but i had a lot more fun with the rest of them. samurai spy especially

The first thing that came to mind when I read this thread title was the Zatoichi movies. I see these have already been discussed here... I have only seen about half of them, but that shit is off the chain.

Did anyone actually like that newest one from like 2003 with the other actor? I watched it a few months ago, and was not too impressed.

Every time I think about it, the bad Slumdog Millionaire style ending is what I remember. It had a lot to live up to, being compared to the older movies, too. Standing on it's own, it is not too bad of a movie, though.

the remake was missing katsu's sense of humor. which is weird since Kitano started out as a comedian

Word. Seems like dude is in every awesome samurai movie....a bunch of the Kurosawa's, Kobayashi's, Sword of Doom...

Copped PoH and then grabbed one of the last cheap copies of Demon Spies on Amazon...that one is out of print too now.

Have you seen Ichikawa's 47 Ronin? I liked his movies that Criterion put out.

47 is a little dry, not much going on as far as action until the last 30 mins or so and kinda flat in the character department - there's so many people involved, most poorly realized. mostly it just cycles through the history of the event in great deal. that's a rental more than a buy imo

demon spies is a good pick up though, not the greatest chambara but i'm a fan, solid entry into the genre imo. shows you how ninjas are trained from a young age and then their first mission, with a decent amount of violence and intrigue and a bit of sleaze. Azumi was clearly influenced by it.

Just saw that Animeigo announced they are putting out Kudo's Samurai Revolution trilogy next year, which includes the original 13 Assassins movie (the other two are The Great Duel and Eleven Assassins).
Pretty dope.

There's some obscurities playing in NYC including another 47 Ronin picture I never heard of, anyone see that one?

Good looks for T Bunz Portrait of Hell rec; I've had that in my Netflix queue forever thinking: worth it or not?

47 loyal ronin is pretty dope, great cast, but slow and long too. you gotta dig in and be ready for a lot of talking and random names flying at you

Shinsengumi Chronicles: I Want to Die a Samurai looks really interesting, that director is responsible for the best of the lone wolf and cub and some great zatoichi entries, among other things. And I'll watch pretty much anything wiht Wakayama in a big role

Animeigo put out a dvd of Shinsengumi Chronicles btw. I've bought most of their samurai dvds but haven't gotten that one yet though.

Out of all those films showing I'd be most interested in Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees. Seems like a cool story and I'm a fan of everything I've seen from Shinoda (Double Suicide, Samurai Spy, plus I got the criterion of Pale Flower on deck to watch soon).
I wish cool shit like this would play near me.

Yeah, those oft-told tales are a bitch to keep track of. Iג€™ll see anything by Shinoda as well, but I might check out Killing in Yoshiwara being a follower of Uchida (even tho a lot of the stuff I've seen is meh).

Itג€™s a crime that Bloody Spear at Mt. Fuji isnג€™t more well known (Criterion treatment please), at least as good as the best of Kurosawa and other masters.

Just a heads up, looks like the zatoichi movies that Animeigo had the rights to are going out of print, might be the last chance to ever buy ichi movies at regular prices since all the homevision ones are OOP now too.

What was the verdict on the female ichi movie?

Image

blu-ray is only $9.47 on amazon right now, just picked it up.
The only ichi-related releases I need to complete my collection are the TV episodes and the never officially released 14th movie.

tries a little too hard to emphasize drama over action, but pretty good otherwise

lone wolf and cub movies are the originals, subbed. shogun assasin movies are dubbed into english and there are five instead of 6 because the first shogun assasin movie is the first two lone wolf & cub movies spliced together into one.

Really all you need is the original Lone Wolf and Cub movies and the first Shogun Assassin, imo.
