Trailer for new Jet Li movie and other new martial arts

Post by drizzle »

Trailers

Fearless (aka Spirit) - a new Jet Li movie which is supposed to be his last. This is classic period action in early 90's HK style, think Once upon a time in China and Fist of Legend. The character he is playing is actually Fok Yun Gap, the Master that he came back to avenge in Fist of Legend. Choreography by Yuen Woo Ping, fighting cameos by Michelle Yeoh, Nathan Jones and a bunch of other ill nasty mf'ers. Looks like the best thing he's done in years, but trailers have fooled me before

http://www2.warnerbros.jp/broadband/trailer/80.wvx

The Promise - dont' know much about this one. I think it's Korean and it's been making waves at various festivals. Trailer makes it look like a mix between Hero and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, and I mean that in the best way possible

http://www2.warnerbros.jp/broadband/trailer/71.wvx

Sha Po Lang - trailers has been around for a while, but it just came out in China and HK. Coulnd't find a mention of it here, so here you go. This looks like another throwback to early 90 HK style of movie making, a mash up of modern martial arts, bullet ballet, and cop/triad genres. Starring Donny Yen, Simon Yam, and SAMMO MOTHERFUCKING HUNG as the BAD GUY for the first time ever. The reviews have uniformely incredible. Supposedly it's out in torrents and bootlegs, but watch out for the edited mainland cut

http://rapidshare.de/files/4265151/splt ... .rmvb.html

Tom Yum Goong - another one that not totally news but didnt' see anything posted. OFFICIAL SEQUAL TO ONG BACK, nuff said.

There's a couple more coming if i find the trailers.

SPL is out on torrents, because I have it. I haven't so much watched it yet though.

And is Tom Yum Goong really a sequel? I was under the impression that it features totally different characters and what not. I should probably check since I have that on my computer too. No time, no time...

Does the SPL you got have a twist ending?

TYG is a sequel in the same way that The Good The Bad and The Ugly is a sequel.

BTW, i hate you so so so much for having both of those, i'm crazy jealous. I've been waiting for both of them for ages. I don't have access to torrents, I got to cop bootlegs old fashioned style, from porno shops around times square and china town.

And as long as we're here, have you seen B13, The Bodyguard and/or 7 Swords yet? All recommended, worth checking. Make sure you get the longer version of 7 swords though, the short one is ass.

Ha, I hate you for having a crazy dvd player with all the hookups so that you can watch all the great region 2 releases. What I wouldn't give to have (and be able to use) the special editions of Fistful of Dollars and (especially) For a Few Dollars More, oh and Fistful of Dynamite too.

Anyway, I haven't watched SPL yet, so I don't know about the ending. I just got it a couple days ago, and I'm mired in papers and general end of semester bullshit so it'll be a little while before I get to it. Same with Tom Yum Goong. And fair enough about the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly comparison.

I have not seen 7 Swords yet, but I'd like to. I haven't even heard of B13 or the Bodyguard.

And I would totally give you access to my torrent place, but they haven't accepted new members in over a year, and I don't have any sort of seniority there so I can't make requests like that. But maybe I will anyway.

thats cause it was posted 400 years ago LOL :lastweek: :lastweek: :lastweek: :lastweek: :lastweek:

nah TYG is no sequel.
Born to Fight was made after Ong Bak anyways (even though the director of Ong Bak wasnt involved, but is involved with TYG), but Tony Jaa was in it, same shit happens, i.e. lots of crazy action...it coulda been called a sequel too.
but no one gave a fuck about that movie (understandably)
Although the sequence with guys fighting on top of moving tractor trailers and getting knocked off and almost run over was :ohsh: :ohsh: :ohsh:

I just got TYG downloaded as well but have yet to watch it

and Fearless is Jet Li's last martial arts movie

so he says

I think the Promise looks pretty promising (WINK!!!)

I really like (one of) the posters

Tony Jaa was not in Born To Fight. It was staged by the same stunt team, and had some of the same fighters (same bad guy too). I actually liked that one a whole lot, the "sports" moves were nice. I usually just watch the first chase with the truck and then fast forward till about 45 mins in. The last 40 are one long fight scene.

Tony Jaa is in the Bodyguard though, for 5 minutes. That movie is good too, i'm trying to dig up a trailer.

As far as Jet Li, judging by his acting in Unleashed, if it's his last MA movie it might as well be his last movie period. I hate to say it cause i'm a big fan of his, but I just can't see him doing anything else. He should retire to the mountains and teach kung-fu, i'd be there in a heart beat.

The Promise does look cool, i've never seen anything about it until the trailer, reminds me of Legend Of Zu for some reason. (the old one, not the CGI abortion)

I don't know what the other one is, however the two dudes wearing their gi (sp?) caught my eye as well.

I can't believe you guys haven't heard of Banlieu 13 (B13). I gots to find a trailer for that too.

ahh fuck youre right, I didnt know why I was thinking Tony Jaa was in that.
I knew Ong Bak was in someway affiliated... Otherwise there's no way in fucking hell I ever would have seen it.
it *has* been a long time since I saw it though.
they all look alike to me :omgracist:

I have heard of B13 but I never really gave a fuck.. maybe I'll look into it

EDIT: the more I think about it, the more I think that Tony Jaa was in that fucking movie. I fucking SWEAR. Even after knowing that he isnt, I still think he is.
hmm. that's really weird.

Because I'm busy, unfortunately. And I never get that excited to watch shit on my laptop. I had Ong Bak on my computer for like a year and never watched it, and finally saw it during its brief US theatrical run. If Tom Yum Goong was playing on a movie screen tonight, I'd make time for it. But I won't go out of my to watch shit on a computer screen. Maybe I'll watch it on the plane next week. I guess I could have watched it last night, because I went to see 2046 at the Cleveland Cinematheque. I'm alright though, I had a good time watching 2046.

It was mixed. On the one hand, it's very enjoyable (assuming you like Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood For Love style) and sumptuous and beautiful, on the other hand way to pick like six stories and do justice to none of them and nice try shoehorning sci fi bullshit into a movie that didn't need it.

I feel like the Faye Wong, Zhang Ziyi, and Gong Li stories all could have worked as a movie had they been given enough screen time. Especially the Zhang Ziyi section, oh man does Chris Doyle make her look amazing. Outrageous. I enjoyed the movie, but I think you definately just gotta let it wash over you and not get too attached to any of the characters. Oh, and it was real widescreen, 2.39:1 or whatever the ratio is, and I always love that. There was a great song in it called Perfidia that I've been listening to today, kind of reminds me of Chad and Jeremy's A Summer Song. I don't know, if you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer; I don't know what to say about the movie. I think I definately need to see it again in order to get it all absorbed.

This tells me that it at least warrants a some attention. A movie that you have to watch more than once to get the full effect is usually pretty interesting.

Banlieue 13 - site with trailers and clips. This is a must watch if you're a fan of kung-fu and dumb action in general.

This movie, Ong Bak/TYG/Born to fight, SPL - this is like a whole new age/wave of martial arts cinema. No CGI, very little wires, talented stunt men/performers instead of pop-idols twirling on strings, this shit's giving me a half-boner just thinking about it.

ok, just watched Tom Yum Goong

SPOILER ALERT KINDA

here's what needs to happen.
Cut out EVERYTHING in the movie EXCEPT

1. Tony Jaa flying in from off screen to knee a guy in the chest.

2. The scene where he shows up in that club and kicks EVERYONES ass, in one, LOOONG, extended shot. An absolutely INCREDIBLE sequence.

3. The scene where he goes on an absolute rampage and probably sets a record for consecutive broken limbs (or just broken limbs total) all in the same fight scene. Just wait til you see it. Absolutely ridiculous. And awesome. If only Steven Seagal would've made a cameo and started helping him break limbs. Potential for the greatest moment in motion picture history.

4. And the part where that guy throws the fucking elephant. WHAT?!?!?

I would love to see this again, cause the version I had was kinda bad quality, but definitely watchable. But I'd love to see a nice, DVD quality version of this.

That CG sequence in the middle of the movie was pathetic, but understandably so. I know they can't get fucking ILM or anything, but still, it shouldnt have been there.
Those shots near the end of the movie of him and his elephant super-imposed on the street just walking were AWFUL.
Actually, anytime any hint of CG was used, it was terribly obvious.
I say they refrain from using CG again until they can afford good CG.
Plus, I hate when foreign movies hire SHITTTTTTY english actors.
I guess they figure Thai audiences wont know the difference, just like we probably wouldnt really know if the Thai actors are shitty or not.
Sometimes you can tell though. Sometimes it's pretty damn obvious.

that being said, I cant wait for the next one

and hey Moolah, you know pretty much the majority of this takes place in Australia? Sydney even....I think....
I'm not sure if they shot on location or not, but that's where it was supposed to take place.

TYG - After me bitching friday about not having this, the bootleg gods smiled and I copped it the same day on the way home.

Andvil pretty much nailed it. Continuing down the same road as Ong Bak, they managed to make a worse movie with better fights. Fast forward through the 'plot', just watch the action. The choreography is better than Ong Bak, much more polished, plus he actually has a bunch of good people to go against. One tiny beef - not as many flying elbows as in the first, but upping the number of flying knees is a good substitute.

SPOILERS:

Every fight is incredible, but some things did stand out a little more. The highlights for me (keep in mind, this is only a FRACTION of what happends):

1. Jaa in the villa, kicking the same 2 guys in the stomach about 7 times in a row, over and over and over and over

2. Rollerblader getting clipped in mid-air, doing 30 flips and landing face first into a dumpster

3. The broken lightbulb - can't describe it, you got to see it

2. The one-take run against the night club

3. Jaa vs Jonhy the Tae-kwan Do (?) guy, going kick for kick

4. The capoera fight - the whole thing, possibly one of my favorite fights ever

5. The finishing move on the sword guy

6. The 200 man bone-breaking seminar

6. Jaa landing on Nathan Jones's shoulders with his knees.

7. THE DUDE THROWS A FUCKING ELEPHANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^^ haha I dont think I ever saw that......number 7 definitely has to be emphasised

the reason I re-up this thread is because of the following news on "The Promise", American style:::

Weinstein Co. Butchers The Promise with Chen Kaige's Approval

While the Weinstein Company is a new venture, the practice by Harvey and associates of cutting Asian films to suit American sensibilities has not changed. Due to the dramatic alterations to Chen's The Promise, we will refer to the edited version, as retitled for the U.S., Master of the Crimson Armor. Such editing will undoubtedly deter Asian film fans from going to theaters to support such disrespect.

Studio Hopes Leaner Means Greener
Source: variety.com

The Promise, which runs 121 minutes, is China's official entry for the foreign-language Academy Award. Meanwhile, the Golden Globes nominated a Chinese film that's 24 minutes shorter, Master of the Crimson Armor.

The funny thing is, they're the same film.

The $35 million fantasy actioner, in its longer version, opened to a boffo $9 million opening week, reportedly a record in its native land.

Last May, Harvey Weinstein and the Weinstein Co. took North American, U.K., Australian and South African rights to the film in May in a joint acquisition with IDG Films.

L.A.-based producer Ernest Etchie Stroh, prexy of production and sales shingle Moonstone Entertainment, says, Harvey looked at the movie and conveyed certain concerns about how it would play with Western audiences. I had almost identical feelings and took these to Kaige.

After a few NRG screenings in the U.S. to test audiences' understanding of plot and character, Blighty-based consultant Matt Garner joined Chen and Stroh in recutting the picture. It now runs 97 minutes. Stroh adds, There is an explicit clause that says Chen Kaige has final cut. This is definitely his movie. Weinstein Co. came with problems and offered solutions.

Chen tells Variety, I wanted to make a Chinese film that works for the Chinese market, but I also want to get Chinese elements into the world market. Western audiences may not have the same patience as Asians. What we have now looks more of an action movie, but I think the soul of the movie is still there. Harvey sent people to help with things like the subtitles, and I participated all the way.

In China, the longer version brought in approximately $2 million (RMB16 million) on its opening day, December 14th. Though ticket prices were set super-high for the first day, that's an astonishing number. Pic is expected to eventually rake in $16 million - $25 million in China.

The shorter version is set to screen for U.S. critics shortly, prior to the Los Angeles Oscar-qualifying run that begins December 30th.

Revised version gave the film a new beginning and a modified ending and clarifies the role of the princess, played by Cecilia Cheung Pak-chi, who had been regarded by some as schizophrenic in her relations with the male characters.

Anyways, ^^^^^^^ type of shit happends all the time (the promise i mean), I kind of have mixed feelings about it. Truth is, a lot of times the shit that's cut out really doesn't translate well to americans (or anyone else), and it has nothing to do with dumbing down. I'm gonna go out on a limb to say that for instance, asian humor is often retarded and painfully unfunny, as displayed by kung-fu "comedies" of the 70's and later by Wong Jing's body of work. Small example, after watching a full cut of New Legend of Shaolin, i'm really glad that I can go get the 7$ Jet Li Collection DVD at Best Buy. It's only 5 minutes shorter, plot is the same, but without scenes of ghost grandma fart jokes this movie is literally elevated a whole notch in rating. An action movie should be concentrated on the action, that's what you're there to see, not stilted character development, pointless romantic sideplots and bad chinese puns that don't translate to english.

Obviously, it's different for serious movies. I haven't seen the Promise, and I'm not too sure what its about, so it's hard to say what effect the cut would have. Maybe they cut out a subplot that went nowhere, or only had meaning if you're well familiar with Chinese history and customs. Maybe the director felt it shouldn't be there at all. The story does emphasize that he had final say on this version. Don't go up in arms yet, is all i'm saying.

While on the topic of edited movies, I copped the short (mainland) version of Sha Po Lang and will put up a review here shortly <<<<< smooth ass transition, English 101 pays off

yeah I'm not throwing fits or anything.
I could understand if the movie were 3 hours or something, but it's only 2, and 20 minutes seems like a hefty chunk, but you're right, the movie will have to been seen to determine. Both versions.
