The Ghost in the Shell series is pretty good if you haven't checked it out yet. Obviously not as lavish as the movies, but good stories

And as usual, my standard anime recommendation is Golgo13, which isn't scifi but is awesome beyond words

Berserk, I've never heard anyone say a bad word about it. Even from people who don't watch anime.

Have seen Akira, not yet Ninja Scroll (though it completely slipped my mind when I was meaning to see it).
You need to watch Ninja Scroll.

Fist of the North Star and Venus Wars wouldn't go amiss either.

Plenty of good suggestions in this thread (Akira, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Berserk, Samurai Champloo)

Death Note isn't really what you asked for but it's the only anime I have made time for in years. Very psychological/logic-based. Let me just put it this way: I had not watched an anime series in at least two years. Then, last summer, I watched all 37 episodes of Death Note in about a week.

Here's the other thread
http://www.philaflava.com/forum/viewtop ... highlight=

Anyways, this has been a good reminder to me that I've been slacking off. I think since that last thread, I've rewatched Akira and saw Ninja Scroll.

I still like the Vampire Hunter D movies better than the other anime movies I've seen. All five of them.

Here is the lists of movies ans series that I think are must watch:

Series:

Coboy Bebop
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Gundam Wing
Samurai Champloo
Initial D
Bleach
Trigun
Ghost in the Shell S.A.C.
Robotech

Movies:

Vampire Hunter D
Golgo 13
8 Man After
Ninja Scroll
Ghost in the Shell
Cowboy Bebop
Patalabor
Blood the Last Vampire
Naussicaa
Princess Mononoke

as you can see I am not into much of the newer stuff. The only thing that I have watched that has come out recently was Samurai Champloo and bleach.
