also, brits should keep an eyo out for this, at least as a rental

http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/27221367 ... fer=search

wildly obscure modern dtv kung fu flick that has reached a hysterically legendary status among collectors. trailers make it look like the action at least might be worth the hype

been waiting for this for a while, mirage man and kiltro were dissapointing but this is said to be a vast improvement in every way. zaror is a beast, especially considering his size, but the only time he ever got to really show his full potential was in undisputed 3
this looks promising

first wuxia review, very positive

review says second half is balls out brawling, counter to previous reports that movie doesn't actually have that much action and was mostly a detective story, which i was kinda looking forward to actually. murder mystery kungfu doesn't happen often, Johnie To's Enigmatic Case is maybe the only one i can recall off the dome (incidentally one of the few oldschool kunfu movies which is worth watching for story moreso than the action). Hark's Butterfly Murders also kinda qualifies.
just watched this, 2nd half was definitely not balls out brawling
there was more than the first half, but there arent't many fights at all

I liked it, but I think I was expecting too much. Takeshi Kaneshiro is one of my favs, and Donnie Yen is the god obviously
but something just didnt click
the whole inner voice/split personality of the detective felt pointless
the 72 Dragons didnt really even have a presence, there never felt like any real threat

spoiler
one-armed swordsman Donnie fukkin ruled though

out of nowhere this is getting insanely good reviews, for both the action and the movie itself

allegedly it's a throwback to the good old early 90s days of patriotic kungfu movies like Once Upon A Time In china, as opposed to the blatant commie propaganda of the last 5 years

dragon eyes, with van damme playing something like a pai mei in kill bill role. trailer is way too long but this looks pretty decent. supposed to be based on yojimbo fwiw

looks interesting

really hoping the success The Raid managed with its non-existent budget and distribution will inspire some lowbudget kungfu movies that aren't painfully terrible amateur efforts. too many stuntmen out there keep mistaking the ability to kick convincingly with the ability to make a good movie and the results are dire

Finally, that teaser trailer for ONCE UPON A TIME IN SHANGHAI that channels the old Shaw Brothers kung fu movies of the 70s? Yes, please, I want to see more. The film is based on what is probably the ur-story of Chinese gangsters and martial arts, ג€œShandong Ma Yongzhen.ג€ The first film about Ma Yongzhen, a boxer from Shandong province who runs afoul of a Shanghai gang, was made in Shanghai in 1927. Chang Chehג€™s version, THE BOXER FROM SHANTUNG, starred Chen Kuan-tai and was made for the Shaw studio in 1972. Corey Yuen remade the story as HERO in 1997, with Takeshi Kaneshiro and Yuen Biao. Yuen Woo-ping is the action director on the new one, and Philip Ng, another relative newcomer, steps into the role of Ma Yongzhen. Sammo Hung is also in the cast. No word yet on a release date.
Boxer from Shantung is in my top3 Chang Cheh and top 3 shaw bros period (the two maybe identical actually), and the story itself is actually surprisingly solid and very well adaptable to modern setting. It's something that could actually be turned into a legit gangster drama if they chose to go that way instead of pure action. But since they did go action, the fact that they got Yuen Wo Ping and the fact that the teaser is obviously footage from the credit sequence and it's a dead ringer for all Shaw stuff... :jiz: x infinity

there are two roles meant for older gawds in this story, one of a 'good' og gangster mentor and one of an evil one. not sure which one i want sammo to be, a villain role for him would be incredible

Def his best action-oriented jawnt since 00, and maybe even accounting for the Milky Ways glory days of late 90s. It's hard to compare it to his more gonzo work of late 80s and early 90s, but everybody was on some other shit back then.
