one more Tom Yun Goong 2 trailer, action looks appropriately insane and RZA actually seems pretty good and appropriately scene-chewing as the villain

Second trailer for Ninja 2, looks dope as shit. Florentine and Adkins are the fuckign Kurosawa and Mifune of american straight to dvd martial arts movies

http://twitchfilm.com/2013/11/ninja-2-s ... ailer.html

I rewatched the first one and while it was maligned by everyone including the makers themselves, I'm still a big fan. The main critique was that there's not enough ninja stuff, but the ninjas look like power rangers in this shit so why would you want more of that. All that aside, it plays exactly like those late 80s/early white boy kungfu jawnts staring dudes like David Bradley and Gary Daniels and Loren Avedon. And the action is mostly excellent, which is the main reason to watch anyway. So I'm riding for it, fuck the haters.

Oh also, Special ID is very dope in that 'shitty movie filled with amazing fights' way that's describes most of this genre for the last 30 years or so. Among Donnie's modern day efforts, it's about as good as Flash Point but not as good as SPL. There's some really great choreography tho. Def highly recommended as fight/stunt porn.

New jawn choreographed by YWP, with Sammo Hung and a couple of promising young dudes in it. Pretty sure I saw Chen Kuan Tai in there too, and fittingly a Shaw logo flashes briefly (although they only distributed this)

Ninja 2 is dope but I'm pressed to find any significant difference from the first one

The power ranger-looking modern day ninja suit doesn't show up. The tone is darker. The plot is a little better, especially on the villain side. These are all good looks but I guess I expected a more drastic revamp.

The main problem of the first still carries over to this one too - there isn't really any ninja action. There is a brief opening scene which implies there will be more of it... and then you don't see any until Adkins finally straps on the pajamas for the final fight. And even then, he does ninja shit for about 3 mins total before the action falls back into regular hand to hand fighting. This is still mostly a movie about a white dude in jeans kicking random baddies in the face, and that's fun to watch, but the 'ninja' title is perfunctory. The absence is actually more frustrating and more felt here, the story is set up to deliver all sorts of rains of shurikens and dudes clinging to ceilings, but doesn't follow through on its own ques.

But all that aside this is a good b-movie, on par with the rest of Florentine's and Adkin's recent d2dvd work. No frills, tons of good action performed by capable actors. Undisputed 3 still reigns as the best of them, but this is def a worthwhile addition to their streak.

rip Run Run Shaw, although the obits are already a maddening shit show

dude was a shrewd businessman, studio exec and a producer, and when he saw kungfu movies making money he bankrolled more of them. which eventually led to Shaws becoming a powerhouse in the genre. but he didn't fucking invent the genre, and the studio actually did a whole whole lot more than just martial arts

so I saw it. it sucks

the fact that I saw it one week after Raid 2 def doesn't do it i any favors, but it doesn't just suck by comparison, it sucks all around. maybe slightly better than Ong Bak 3, but that's like saying drowning in lumpy turds might be slightly more preferable to drowning in liquid diarrhea.

wires and awful cgi galore, and the shitty shitty attempts at 3d make even the real stunts and hits look fake. Jaa still gets some good moves in here and there but his entire appeal was based in his physical ability, and since the attempts at 3d/cgi undermine and undercut the raw appeal of him simply kicking somebody... there isn't really much reason to watch anymore. ultimately the result isn't any better than any other shitty average asian fight movie filled with unconvincing pop stars floating on wires, exactly the kind of shit that Jaa was supposed to be an alternative to.

the plot is terrible even by bad kungfu movie plot standards, just utterly incomprehensible. RZA is clearly having a ball playing the villain, and actually doesn't look too terrible in his fight scene, but his character's schtick is wildly corny and it's hard to buy that he is supposed to be a superior fighter compared to his obviously stronger henchmen.

the best part of all this is RZA's #2, Maurice Crump. The one scene where he pretty much wipes the floor with Jaa is the movie's biggest highlight. some kinda blaxploitationy/black belt jones-ish thing starring him and Michael Jai White is so so so necessary

So this new Donnie Yen movie is dope as shit, his best since Sha Po Lang (Killzone). Better than even Ip Man imo. Yen is actually only like the 3rd best thing about this. In this order:

1. the villain - steals the show bigtime. one of the best on recent memory, up there maybe better than Hammer Girl/Baseball Dude/Mad Dog from the Raids

2. the premise/execution - basic plot of a bad guy challenging masters to death duels just to prove himself could've easily been a Shaw Bros movie 40 years ago, here it's transposed and updated for a modern setting. the serial killer angle is a nice touch, kinda wish they did more with it. the whole movie is actually a subtle tribute to HK action history, not as good as Gallants in that regard but up there.

3. Yen himself. Still looks good fighting, and actually gets some fairly decent acting in too.

FLORENTINE AND ADKINS BYKE!

Apparently Undisputed 4 is done filming already too, the synopsys from IMDB is solid although I didn't see anybody I recognized in the cast aside from Adkins himself (so no notable villain like Zaror in this one)
In the fourth installment of the fighting franchise, Boyka is shooting for the big leagues when an accidental death in the ring makes him question everything he stands for. When he finds out the wife of the man he accidentally killed is in trouble, Boyka offers to fight in a series of impossible battles to free her from a life of servitude.
say IMPOSSIBLE BATTLES with a Boyka accent tho

Yeah, the end credits had a nice who's who montage of notable names from martial arts cinema, although I'm not familiar in any of them - other than a couple of obvious people.

The film was ok, but the fights, the crippled serial killer and of course Donnie were the major highlights.
